An all-new animated take on the Batman story is coming to HBO Max and it has some very big names attached.

A new animated series called Batman: Caped Crusader has been announced and will be coming to HBO Max and Cartoon Network. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project will be headed up by J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Bruce Timm. Reeves and Timm have plenty of experience when it comes to telling The Dark Knight’s story in a variety of ways.

“The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters,” Abrams revealed via a statement. An interesting take that is compounded by the first poster revealed for the show. Batman’s origin story has been covered countless times, so it’s important the show doesn’t retread any ground in the same way that it has been before.

That shouldn’t be a problem since, as mentioned above, Reeves and Timm, in particular, are very familiar with how Batman’s tale has been told in the past. Reeves directed The Batman which will hit theaters at some point in 2022, while Timm helped develop the iconic Batman: The Animated Series during the mid-1990s.

“Batman: The Animated Series was a masterpiece that shaped the perception of the character for an entire generation of fans,” explained Warner Bros. Animation president Sam Register. The aim of bringing Reeves, Timm, and Abrams together for Caped Crusader is to recreate the “groundbreaking legacy” left by the original animated series 25 years ago. The show will reimagine the Batman mythology and come to HBO Max and Cartoon Network sometime in the future.

DC continues to enjoy a lot of renewed success on the animated front. Harley Quinn’s animated show has been renewed for a third season and will return later this year, also via HBO Max. Since Caped Crusader is being created with Cartoon Network in mind, odds are the two shows won’t be taking place in the same universe. Quinn’s show is very much geared towards a more adult audience. DC’s video game slate is also loaded with the releases of Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League to look forward to.
