Warning: Spoilers for Batman #113!

With Fear State finally arriving in DC Comics, Batman has his hands full trying to keep his city safe, and now his rival turned friend, Ghost-Maker, has complimented Bats on the one thing he actually does incredibly well: build sweet cars! The Batmobile and its various incarnations may be iconic sets of wheels on their own, but Ghost-Maker calling attention to them is a big surprise for a guy that rarely gives Batman the credit he deserves.

Admitted while deep-diving into Batman’s fractured mind during the events of Batman #113, by James Tynion IV and Jorge Jimenez, Ghost-Maker isn’t a character usually known for his supportive comments or welcoming demeanor. Tasked by The Dark Knight to help weed out any lingering trauma his psyche may be facing from being subject to Scarecrow’s new and wildly powerful fear tactics, Ghost-Maker uses Batman’s rudimentary “bat-mind-control helmet” to help Bruce ensure that his mind hasn’t been compromised.

Taken on a whirlwind journey deep into Batman, Ghost-Maker, and even Scarecrow’s past, Batman slowly begins to lose himself as he can’t figure out if his mind has truly been tainted or if he’s simply overthinking his trauma more than necessary. Subsequently finding Batman in a literal prison of his own mind’s making, Ghost-Maker recounts Bruce’s life in an attempt to ground Batman in his telepathic stupor, inadvertently telling readers exactly what he believes Batman to be best at in the process.

Following his initial recap of Batman’s journey by saying, “And despite never measuring up, you came back to Gotham, dressed up like a bat, and started trying to tame this feral city,” Ghost-Maker sets up his next comment in a way that he wouldn’t have admitted to under any other circumstance. Adding, “And you made some very good cars,” Ghost-Maker finally brings Batman back to himself in a way that acts as a surprisingly real and truthful compliment, as well as a call out to Batman’s skills as a genius mechanic and inventor.

Known to build basically all of his bat-tech and various modes of transportation from scratch (sometimes with or without the help of his confidants Alfred Pennyworth and Lucius Fox), Batman getting a compliment from a rival who gives him crap whenever the opportunity arises is a huge admittance for a character that sees himself as Batman’s better in just about every way. Designing his own “bat-cave” to top the original, Ghost-Maker has been particularly interested in Batman’s cars in the past, even making his own version of the Batmobile dubbed the Ghost-Racer, a car that still has yet to eclipse Batman’s ride despite Ghost-Maker’s attempts.

So while Ghost-Maker will always be the first person to call Batman out on his flaws, he’s also no stranger to complimenting the guy from time to time. Ghost-Maker may think he’s far better than The Dark Knight when it comes to fighting crime, but Batman’s cool bat-themed fleet of automobiles is just too good to be replicated — and Ghost-Maker knows it.
