The year of battle royale continues, and DICE’s Battlefield V will soon be coming to join the party. While many people are going to say they don’t care, the truth is that a lot more will play it. A lot of people are playing battle royale games. So it makes sense to pay attention to how Battlefield’s take on the genre will differ. For one, the mode isn’t even being developed by DICE. Which begs the question: who is making it?
In case you haven’t been keeping up, DICE officially confirmed that Battlefield V will have a battle royale mode during this summer’s E3. Of course, rumors had been pointing to it long before that. A report from VG247 reminds readers that the mode isn’t going to launch with the game, leading many to believe that it’s still in early development. The report also confirms another interesting detail: DICE isn’t making the mode.
The official word came from, of all places, a Star Wars Battlefront thread. The Battlefront subreddit has been acting as a place to share grievances as of late, with the game’s more dedicated players expressing their distaste for the game’s lack of content. A lack, they claim, that is the result of DICE shifting employees from Battlefront II to Battlefield V en masse.
“Just a reminder,” a post reads, “they took Devs away from Battlefront 2 to make a Battle Royale for Battlefield V.” This prompted a response from Ben Walke, the global community lead for EA’s Star Wars efforts. Basically, it’s his job to assuage the enraged Battlefront players and put out EA’s fires. A job he did on this post by replying “Royale is being made by a different studio, not DICE.”
It was a short, almost snippy confirmation, but confirmation nonetheless. It also opens the door for speculation. DICE LA, a different branch, was the suspected developer for battle royale. But Walke made it sound like it’s a totally different developer. VG247 pointed out that Battlefield V will run on EA’s Frostbite engine, meaning the mystery developer is likely one of the studios under EA’s umbrella.
Battlefield V releases October 19th for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
