Bayonetta 3 director Yusuke Miyata previously worked on PlatinumGames’ canceled project Scalebound — an action-slasher with giant dragons and demonic hands. That’s why his next title might share a similar gameplay feature never seen in the Bayonetta franchise before.

As shown in Bayonetta 3 recent footage, players will be able to directly control summoned demons. According to Scalebound’s former lead producer Jean Pierre Kellams, the new game director might possibly bring over gameplay mechanics from his latter project. Bayonetta 3 development is headed by Yusuke Miyata, who earlier designed many key elements for the unreleased Scalebound.

JP Kellams shared his thoughts on Twitter, where he confirmed that Yusuke Miyata was the lead designer on Scalebound and that he is “super talented.”

“The controlling the summons thing looks VERY similar to a mechanic that we had in Scalebound to control Thuban. Now that I’ve gotten to rewatch the trailer, I’m really psyched for that,” Kellams added. “It’s weird seeing a Bayo that I didn’t work on, but it’s also lots of fun enjoying it as a fan!”

It seems like the canceled project will live on in Bayonetta 3 for better or worse. Microsoft and PlatinumGames couldn’t find a way for Scalebound to reach the Xbox consoles, and in 2017, the game was canceled after more than four years of development. Well, until being revived in some new form now, it appears.

Yusuke Miyata, who worked on Scalebound and Astral Chain, earlier said that this is his first time working on the Bayonetta series, but he’s a big fan and played the previous games nonstop. Under his helm, the team is giving all the efforts to make the third installment a masterpiece worthy of the name Bayonetta — and that’s why the development took more than four years.

Despite borrowing some gameplay mechanics from its less-lucky predecessor, Bayonetta 3 is seemingly not getting canceled, as the title is currently in the “home stretch of development.” Fans shouldn’t be afraid of the new game director either, as the creator Hideki Kamiya still oversees the game’s world and the story.

Bayonetta 3 will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive and will launch on the console sometime in 2022.
