Warning! Spoilers ahead for Transformers: Beast Wars #9!

The Beast Wars Transformers comic has given the newest villain Razorbeast an almost identical origin story to TV show’s Silverbolt, a Maximal most fans know for his relationship with the Predacon Blackarachnia.

In the original television series, Silverbolt is one of the many Maximals still inside a stasis pod that was violently torn from the Maximal vessel during the story’s pivotal crash-landing. Like many of his comrades, Silverbolt’s command code is altered by the Predacon leader Megatron once he emerges from his pod, brainwashing him into becoming a Predacon. Megatron, however, struggles assimilating Silverbolt, so when the Maximals later capture Silverbolt and decide to repair him, that’s all he needs to defect from the Predacons.

While there are still stasis pods containing highly influential Maximals in the comics, Blackarachnia is the sole reason why many of them might emerge evil, for she recently downloaded extremist Predacon views into many of the pods. Now, the Predacon Skold just stumbled across such a pod containing Razorbeast, and his fate is almost identical to what happens to Silverbolt, as revealed in Transformers: Beast Wars #9 by writer Erik Burnham Artist and artist Josh Burcham.

It’s clear by how Razorbeast acts that Blackarachnia successfully downloaded the Predacon file into him. He also instantly befriends Skold because she expedited his awakening by carrying his pod out from a large body of water. Because of how much Skold values friendship and kindness, she becomes utterly devoted to him after he refers to her as a friend. So when Razorbeast is fatally wounded during an attack by a swarm of robotic locals, Skold realizes that his best chance at survival is to start a new life as a Maximal since Megatron would most likely destroy him for being defeated so easily.

Just like Silverbolt, Razorbeast began as a Maximal but is brainwashed into becoming a Predacon before his former comrades turned enemies repair him, in an odd twist of fate. Although the comics have yet to reveal how Razorbeast will react to the Maximals’ kindness, it’s crucial to point out that both his and Silverbolt’s lives are intertwined with a Predacon. Even though Silverbolt effectively severs all ties with the Predacons upon his defection, he later falls in love with Megatron’s Blackarachnia, which eventually results in her becoming a Maximal as well. Meanwhile, Razorbeast has a connection with Skold. How much of an impact his short time with her had on him will be revealed in later issues when he decides to either stay with the Maximals or reunite with Skold.

But do all of these similarities mean that Razorbeast will replace Silverbolt? And will that jeopardize Blackarachnia’s prospective redemption? It’s possible. Unfortunately, IDW’s Beast Wars reboot recently created the false impression that Blackarachnia would be much stronger than her TV counterpart when the comics initially hid how she became a Predacon. This ambiguity yielded the Transformers theory that she, not Tarantulus, made the choice herself. This, in turn, empowered her in such a way that would have allowed her to defect on her own without needing to rely solely on her love for Silverbolt. But a recent issue revealed this wasn’t the case. Regardless, it’s fascinating how the comics retconned Silverbolt’s story and essentially gave it to Razorbeast. His special connection with Skold will assuredly complicate both their lives and allegiances going forward much like how Silverbolt’s love for Blackarachnia did for them as well.
