Just as we were recovering from the Cats trailer, we have been hit with news that a live-action/CGI Tom and Jerry movie is in the pipeline.
Turning beloved animated characters from the past into live-action versions of themselves seems to be the order of the day. Disney has really been taking advantage of the trend, and to be fair to the Hollywood giant, it has done a good job of it so far… for the most part. We’ve got no complaints about The Jungle Book, The Lion King, or Beauty and the Beast.
Outside of the Disney bubble, well, that’s another matter entirely. Other franchises have clearly noticed how much success Disney is enjoying and want a slice of the pie. That’s why we were subjected to the terrible Sonic the Hedgehog trailer earlier this year. Then last week, we got our first look at Cats. We’ll let you argue amongst yourselves over which looks worse.
Brace yourselves, because we have news of yet another live-action/CGI hybrid that is in the works, reports Entertainment Weekly. Another set of cherished childhood characters that Hollywood is eager to ruin. Tom and Jerry. The cat and mouse pairing that has been entertaining children for generations. Literally, as the cartoon first debuted all the way back in 1940.
There have actually been Tom and Jerry movies in the past. We’re personally big fans of the appropriately named Tom and Jerry The Movie which hit theaters back in 1992. According to EW, this live-action offering, which is slated for release in 2021, will focus around the cat and mouse duo being evicted from their home and having to stay in a New York City hotel.
The star-studded cast the movie has racked up so far doesn’t make us any more hopeful that Tom and Jerry will be the exception to the rule. Both Sonic the Hedgehog and Cats have big names attached, and both have offered up trailers that have received nothing but ridicule. We’ll try to save our judgment of Tom and Jerry until the first trailer drops, but that likely won’t be for another year, at least.
