There are plenty of dogs in Skyrim, but no cats. For some reason, our beloved feline friends just aren’t a big deal to the fine Nords of Skyrim, so if you want to see cats you either play as a Khajit or install a mod that adds cats to the world of Tamriel.

But what if you wanted to go even further than merely observing the strange ways of cats? What if you wanted to take one home? To love it, feed it, and care for it like you would a real-life pet?

Well, you’ll soon be able to do just that thanks to A Cat’s Life, a new mod made by Skyrim modder Darkfox127.

With A Cat’s Life installed, a host of furry companions get added to the world of Skyrim. You can approach cats, observe them, pet them, and feed them. Do these things for long enough and you’ll eventually be able to adopt these strays and make them part of your furry menagerie. Get enough of them together and you’ll unlock the Crazy Cat Person perk. We’re not sure what the perk does, but we know that you need at least four cat followers in the mod’s default settings to unlock it.

There’s more to A Cat’s Life than merely adopting strays. You can buy them too, thanks to two new pet stores that are located in Whiterun and Riften. NPCs can have cats, and a configuration page allows you to tweak any of the mod’s settings to make cats either easier or harder to adopt and maintain.

Speaking of cat maintenance, A Cat’s Life also comes with a “Cat Needs” feature that simulates actually taking care of a cat. You need to feed them or else they’ll starve, and you need to play with them otherwise they’ll get bored and wander off eventually. And if you hit them or mistreat them, they might even attack.

A Cat’s Life releases on August 1, 2020. Keep an eye on Darkfox127’s website for updates, or keep an eye on Nexus Mods for when the mod becomes available for download.
