The horrific God Hand villains from Kentaro Miura’s Berserk come to life as the famously outspoken cat Garfield in bizarre new fan art. The snarky cat’s reincarnation as the demonic deities were shocking to many fans but not without striking a funny conversation on Twitter.

The 1978 classic comic strip Garfield created by Jim Davis, follows the misadventures of a lazy cat and his carrying owner Jon. The sarcastic cat’s humor and mischievous ploys are often directed towards his owner or roommate, Odie, the rather impressionable dog. Horror/fantasy manga Berserk, on the other hand, tells the story of Guts, a relentless mercenary swordsman on a perilous journey towards retribution and revenge through demon-infested lands caused by his branding by the mysterious God Hand. The critically acclaimed series made its official debut in 1989′ Young Animal until the manga’s unfortunate end in September after the untimely passing of legendary mangaka Kentaro Miura in early May. Still, Miura’s legacy continues to live on in the hearts of Berserk fans through his creative storytelling and beautifully detailed art style.

The Berserk x Garfield fan art was shared on Twitter by freelance comic artist Sam Owen who showcased Garfield dressed as all 5 God Hand members Void, Slan, Conrad, Ubik, and Femto -renamed “The Garf Hand.” The sarcasm-filled cat isn’t new to fan art crossovers as he’s been Dr. Manhattan from DC’s Watchmen, Swamp Thing, Venom, and an X-Men Sentinel. A new fan webcomic titled Garfbert also stars the overweight cat with comic strip legend Dilbert as his new owner. Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt was also cast as Garfield in the new upcoming Sony and Alcon Entertainment animated film yet to be named.

The fan art perfectly mixes the classic cat comic’s simple art style with Kentaro Miura’s drastic horror elements. Garfield’s classic facial expressions on each God Hand member creates a hilarious homage to the nightmare demons and naturally makes fans wonder what the orange cat could achieve if given a Behelit. Berserk’s God Hand is a group of complex demon deities representing man’s core desires, similar to the Cenobites from Hellraiser. Although, initially, reincarnations of previous humans, including Band of Hawk leader Griffith as the new Femto, the group aren’t Gods but simply bringers of chaos. A perfect position for Garfield, whose hatred for Mondays is rooted in his disinterest in the mundane.

Garfield’s comedic prowess can be seen in a wide variety of T.V. shows such as Garfield and Friends. However, the tabby cat’s media popularity could be compared to the favorable Band of Hawk Leader Griffith, whose ambition drove him to the brink of sacrificing his comrades for immense power. Although Garfield likes to play tricks on his beloved family members, it isn’t fair to say he’d go as far as Griffith to present them as a sacrifice for the source of demonic power. The creative fan art plays on this concept by captivating the horrors of the God Hand with the comic hilarity of Garfield.
