Best & Cleverest Alternative Uses For An AirTag Tracker

Apple’s newest accessory for the iPhone is the AirTag location tracker and while finding lost items was the focus of Apple’s presentation, there are some surprisingly clever uses that may not be immediately obvious. Since Apple’s beacon works with NFC, Bluetooth, and ultra-wideband technologies, AirTag opens up new possibilities.

Apple’s AirTag had been rumored and leaked for several months and even detailed in patents long before it was officially unveiled at the ‘Spring Loaded’ event in April of 2021. Largely matching the predictions, the device is 1.26-inches in diameter and 0.31 inches deep, roughly the size of a bottle cap. It uses ultra-wideband for very precise distance measurement and can make a sound to help identify the location when finding with a Bluetooth device. It contains NFC (Near Field Communication) technology as well, and can share a brief message with an NFC reader, which is a common feature in most smartphones.

Apple’s new AirTag beacon can find lost items and the company gave a few examples, such as the most common thing to lose, keys, along with a good suggestion to track things that contain other things, like luggage, bags, or a backpack. Keychains and wraps or loops for handles make it possible to attach an AirTag to all sorts of items, even bikes or umbrellas. Apparel can also be tracked by placing an AirTag in a pocket. Apple doesn’t want the AirTag to be used to track people without their knowledge and has built some features to prevent that from happening, such as making a sound after a few days away from the owner, or alerting iPhone users that a foreign tracker is traveling with them. However, using an AirTag to find a lost pet might be possible, as long as the animal is within range of a Bluetooth or compatible ultra-wideband device. These are all fairly obvious examples of things that could be lost or misplaced and then found again using an iPhone and one or more AirTag beacons. However, there are some clever uses that aren’t quite as obvious.

Clever Ways To Use Apple’s AirTags

Since the AirTag has increased accuracy when paired with an iPhone 11 or iPhone 12, both of which contain a U1 ultra-wideband chip, it opens up new possibilities. Apple hasn’t published the range of its Precision Finding feature, but a recent YouTube video by Andru Edwards demonstrated usage and showed Find My working from over forty feet away. Apple’s photos and videos show that the Find My app can detect a distance as small as 0.1 feet or 1.2 inches, so that provides enough information to imagine some fun possibilities. For example, precision geocaching for important or valuable items that can’t afford to be lost would make for a fun birthday treasure hunt.

In the comments of the video, Edwards answered a question about use through a wall, confirming that AirTag can be used in this way and that line-of-sight is not required. This opens up opportunities to find a spot on the other side of a wall. This can be useful for drilling a hole in a wall to run wires from room to room, or even a coaxial cable from outdoors. With Precision Finding, an AirTag placed at the desired location on one side of the wall can be tracked from the other side to get the alignment. Outdoors, an AirTag could also be placed as much as forty feet away, or whatever the maximum range is, to get a quick measurement. Using the haptic feedback, a mentalist trick could easily be devised to know when an item was nearby even when blindfolded. The AirTag may have much more advanced capabilities than those suggested here, as Apple revealed in a patent discussing augmented reality and medical uses. While those may not become a reality, Apple’s AirTag makes a great item locator and offers many possible uses.
