Players have loved sniping since ‘Ghillies in the Mist’, a classic mission from Call of Duty 4. Thankfully, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has maintained its series reputation for having some of the best sniper rifles in gaming. CoD 4’s Barret 50 Cal. set a high bar, and developers have been trying to top it ever since.

A skilled sniper is a key component of any Warzone squad. Their ability to call out distant players or instantly down an encroaching enemy will always give their squad the edge. The following guide will focus in on three Sniper Rifles in particular. The all-new Rytec AMR, the community favorite AX-50, and the often slept on Kar 98k. Each rifle introduces its own unique set of advantages, as well as different means of setting it up.

Brand new to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the Rytec AMR. With the ability to fire both explosive and thermal rounds, this death machine can be a sniper’s best friend with the right attachments. Displayed above are the bullet drop rates for two uniquely different setups for the Rytec in comparison to its base bullet drop.

Integral to this set up is the FTAC Seven Straight barrel along with the Rytec Suppressor. The barrel is so long that the full weapon isn’t even displayed on the game screen. As seen above, this set up suffers from minuscule bullet drop at 100 meters away. The distance might be the difference between an enemy’s for-head and their nose. Taking those stats into consideration, a Rytec from about 300 meters away should only require slight vertical compensation for bullet drop, depending on the elevation of course. The scope is up to the player, some prefer the variable zoom for more versatility, others prefer thermal for better target acquisition. There is, of course, a happy medium of both with the variable thermal. (The same can be said in regards to the builds to follow) As far as the remaining attachments are concerned, players can switch out the Tac Laser and Stock for those infamous elemental rounds. Keep in mind that the Rytec, set up this way, is like deadlifting a bag of rocks when it comes to ADS.

Control Focused Rytec AMR in Call of Duty: Warzone

Counter to the long-range build, is the more control focused set up featuring the XRK Harbinger Barrel. As seen above, this set up does begin to experience bullet drop at 70 meters out, however, it does remain manageable. The downside to this set up is the pre-equipped compensator attachment. This will block players from equipping a silencer and reveal their position on the map when firing. Yes, this may seem counter-intuitive, but for those players that are constantly moving, a momentary red blip on enemy mini-maps won’t be all that harmful early to mid-game. This attachment is particularly useful while equipped with the exploding/thermite rounds for taking out enemy vehicles. The higher level of control will allow one to get back on target and shoot down helicopters from a safe distance.

For both of these setups, players should mix and match the exploding/thermite rounds with some different attachments while maintaining the core build of the weapon.

Best Sniper Loadouts in Call of Duty: Warzone – AX-50

People love to hate the AX-50. This sniper rifle has been sending players to Gulag since day one. In the hands of a skilled marksman, the AX-50 is arguably the best long-range weapon in the game. Above are the bullet drop rates for the AX-50 and as one can see, when focused on range, this monster hardly moves an inch.

Range Focused AX-50 in Call of Duty Warzone

The 32-inch barrel makes the AX-50 an absolute beast at long ranges. As mentioned above, there is no bullet drop at 100 meters away. With no attachments, the AX-50 drops about an inch at 100 meters. Suffice to say that players using this long-range set up won’t have to worry about drastic vertical compensation until their about 200 meters out from a target. Unfortunately, private match testing can only go so far. This AX-50 also keeps a leg up on the Rytec due to its faster ADS. While the Rytec is a semi-auto rifle, the quicker ADS of the AX-50 may actually allow players to get back on target faster after loading another round. So long as players maintain the Monolithic Suppressor and the 32-inch barrel, the remaining attachments are interchangeable.

ADS Focused AX-50 in Call of Duty: Warzone

Even the pros miss their first shot sometimes. The most important thing in that situation is to get right back on target (as long as one’s position hasn’t been compromised). This AX-50 set up will sacrifice a bit of range for quicker target acquisition. In those mid/late to late-game circles, players may opt for quicker ADS than maximum range. The bullet drop for this set up is far more egregious than its long-range counterpart. At 100 meters away, the bullet has dropped almost a full two inches, which may mean the difference between a downed enemy and a cracked enemy.

Both these setups are viable at different stages of the game and may tailor differently to individual play styles. If one plans on camping the downtown rooftops, the long-range options are probably best. For those running and gunning through Verdansk, quicker ADS may keep you out of the Gulag.

Best Sniper Loadouts in Call of Duty Warzone – Kar 98k

Even with a silencer equipped, an attentive player can hear an AX-50 from across the map. Therefore, for those who want to truly embrace the stealth-sniper play style, the Kar 98k will answer the call. While it may not be able to compete with the stopping power of the Rytec AMR, or the range of the AX-50, the Kar 98 can still hold its own in long-ranged engagements.

No Sway Kar 98k Set Up

There is really only one way to set up the Kar 98 and this is it. The above set up will only require players to hold their breath for those ‘prayer’ shots that they don’t expect to make but then scream bloody murder when they do. Perfect for mid-range sniping, this Kar set up has lightening ADS speed and will get 5 well-placed shots off long before the Rytec and its semi-auto fire mechanism will. Integral to this set up is the stock barrel on the Kar. Equipping anything longer will make it sway back and forth and completely negate its main advantage. The downside to the Kar is its headshot or bust. A shot to the torso will break a piece of armor or kill an unarmored enemy, but players really need to land their headshots for the Kar to be viable in mid to late-game. As seen in the bullet drop graphic above, the Kar does suffer from a significant drop thus making it more difficult to use in overly long-range engagements. This Kar in the hands of a quick scope wizard may just be the most lethal weapon in Warzone.

Best Sniper Loadouts in Call of Duty Warzone – Pairing & Perks

So players now have a long-range weapon strapped to their back. What else are they going to need to ensure a win in the Warzone? First and foremost, players should be grabbing their Overkill class on their first loadout, and then their Ghost class on the second (making sure to pick their Overkill guns back up). A helpful hint is to equip one’s Ghost class weapon with the ‘Fully Loaded’ perk as a free refill on ammo. E.O.D and Cold Blooded are viable blue perks with E.O.D having the edge since most players are C4 happy. Those focused on sniping may want to consider Amped as their yellow perk. Being able to quickly switch to one’s secondary will save their skin more times than they care to admit.

Weapons wise, players should pair their Sniper Rifle with something suitable for close-range engagements. Submachine guns are arguably the best bet, but there are certain ways players can set up their assault rifles to fill the short to mid-range void. Tactical equipment is at the discretion of the squad. It doesn’t make sense for everyone to be running heartbeat sensors. Flash and stun grenades are great for pushing enemy teams. Smokes are great for repositioning or retreating.

Players should feel free to mix and match any of these sets ups to better fit their play style. No longer will they be helpless on the receiving end of relentless sniper fire.
