Warning: contains spoilers for Beta Ray Bill #2

Acclaimed comic creator Daniel Warren Johnson just snuck an easter egg featuring his Image Comics character Murder Falcon into his new series Beta Ray Bill. While comic creators often sneak cameos of characters they own, it is a practice that has become increasingly rare in a world where the largest comic companies are protective of their IPs.

Beginning publication in 2018, Daniel Warren Johnson’s Murder Falcon is a heavy metal series about a young man named Jake. Though Jake used to be a guitarist in a metal band, everything changes when he experiences a major loss. His grief is seemingly halted by the arrival of a being known as Murder Falcon. Murder Falcon, or Murf as he’s often known, comes to earth to defeat monsters. However, Murf can only do this when Jake shreds on his guitar. The series concluded in 2019 after 8 issues.

Now, Johnson has brought Murf and Jake back in a surprising place, the Marvel Universe. Johnson’s new Beta Ray Bill series sees Bill abandoning Asgard after enduring years of disrespect from Asgardians in general and Thor specifically. He retreats into space on his massive ship Skuttlebutt. After drifting for some time, the ship alerts him that an unknown lifeform has arrived on his ship. Though Bill eventually finds out that it’s Skurge who has come aboard, eagle-eyed viewers will notice a cameo appearance from Murf and Jake who are inhabiting one of Skuttlebutt’s cabins.

Though the easter-egg is undoubtedly nothing more than a fun easter egg, Beta Ray Bill and Murder Falcon share more than just Daniel Warren Johnson. Both series are named after strange-looking creatures who carry a good heart and a strong sense of justice. More than Murf though, Bill is most reminiscent of Jake. These two are characters who are able to overcome their grief and sense of loss to become genuine heroes. Loss plays a large role in Johnson’s work, including his widely-praised series for DC, Wonder Woman Dead Earth.

Regardless of the thematic connection though, this cameo is a touching tribute to the comic that established Daniel Warren Johnson as one of the comic industry’s top talents. Murder Falcon is an incredible series that takes an over-the-top premise and turns it into something earnest and incredibly heartfelt. Devoid of all the cynicism and overt darkness that often plague modern comics, Beta Ray Bill and Murder Falcon are two series with more of a connection than their acclaimed creator.
