Hello Neighbor was released on PC and Xbox One in December 2017. July 2018 saw the game arrive on PS4, Switch, iOS, and Android. The game is a survival horror designed by Russian Studio, Dynamic Pixels. It sees the protagonist attempt to sneak into his neighbors’ house to investigate the creepy goings-on. It has an almost disturbing cartoon aesthetic that helps build a unique atmosphere. The game saw a prequel, Hello Neighbor: Hide & Seek, released in August 2018, and a multiplayer concurrent-quel, Hello Neighbor: Secret Neighbor, that takes place between the original game’s first and second acts. The game has received mixed reviews but has a loyal fan base that this card game will appeal to.
The Hello Neighbor: The Secret Neighbor Party Game is based on a similar concept to the video game of the same name and sees the players, up to a maximum of ten, take on the roles of a group of kids as they try and break into the neighbor’s house. One of the players, however, will take on the role of the secret neighbor and will take steps to undermine the group while their true identity remains hidden. It is down to the remainder to work out who the neighbor is and stop them from winning.
Taking inspiration from games such as party game Werewolf, RPG card game The Resistance, and even the classic Mafia. Unlike other games of this genre, there is no elimination from the game. Instead, players rely on their deductive reasoning to stop the secret neighbor from winning a vote to use one of the keys. Participants must do everything they can to build trust with the other players, to ensure that they are successful. If one of the neighbors uses a key the game is lost.
A limited number of copies will be available during the GenCon Virtual at the end of this month, with the game due to go on general release later this year in October.
