Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson is certain his character will fight Superman, regardless of which actor is in the role. Johnson was first cast as Black Adam back in 2007, and after fifteen years attached to the character, he will finally make his big-screen debut in the 2022 Black Adam film. The film will pit the famous DC villain against The Justice Society of America, whose members include Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher.

However, one name that keeps popping up as a potential Black Adam opponent is not his comic book archenemy Shazam, but Superman. In multiple publicity events, Johnson has teased the arrival of his character will shift the power-balance of the DC Universe, and given Superman’s status as the strongest hero, it feels like an indication of a fight to come. The two have faced off before in other media, from the comic book series Doomsday Clock to the animated short film Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam.

In a recent interview with Total Film, via GamesRadar, Johnson is confident Black Adam will face off against the Man of Steel. Johnson did say, however, that he is unsure what Superman will look like when the two characters eventually meet, suggesting it may not be the current DCEU Superman, Henry Cavill, donning the cape. This does not seem to worry him, though, as he is excited at the prospect of fighting any Superman and is confident it will be what the fans want:

So, let’s make sure we respect tradition and mythology, but let’s not be handcuffed creatively. We can do anything if we keep the audience first. So to me, there’s a battle that’s going to go down one day, between Black Adam and Superman. I don’t know who that Superman is going to be, and I don’t know who’s going to play him. That’s OK. I don’t need to know right now. But I’m confident in knowing that [laughs]. And that’s based out of what fans want. We worked backwards from there.

Johnson had previously mentioned he would want to see Black Adam fight Cavill’s Superman. The English actor himself has been open to reprising his role in a Man of Steel sequel, but Warner Bros. and DC have made no indication of any plans for him. Instead, the studio is developing a new Black-led Superman project produced by J.J Abrams, with a script by Ta-Nehisi Coates. With the upcoming The Flash movie set to introduce the DC Multiverse, there are multiple incarnations of Superman that could fight Black Adam in a future film.

Johnson appears to be listening closely to what the fans are interested in, and he could draw from the comics for a particular source of inspiration. Black Adam is set to introduce the Justice Society of America to the DCEU, and in the comics, Superman from the Kingdom Come universe briefly joined the team after being displaced in the main universe. Brandon Routh, who audiences would already know as Superman from Superman Returns, already played a version of the Kingdom Come Superman in Crisis on Infinite Earths – it was widely suggested that was the same Superman from Superman Returns, and by extension the same as Christopher Reeve’s. Routh has expressed interest in reprising his role as Superman in a Kingdom Come television series, and that could be a tie-in to a Black Adam sequel. This would allow a fight between the two characters while drawing from the comics and expanding on the DC multiverse the studio is so eager to play with.
