Black Panther Costume Designer Confirmed For Silver & Black Movie

Black Panther costume designer Ruth E. Carter will in fact work on Sony’s Silver & Black, jumping from one Marvel movie to quite another. Sony took Marvel fans by surprise when they announced a Venom solo film last year, but it won’t be much longer until the movie arrives. We’ve already seen a teaser for Venom, though Tom Hardy in the Symbiote suit has remained elusive. Whether or not the Spider-Man-less movie works, Sony already seems ready to launch yet another Marvel film.

Silver & Black is set to arrive next year with Gina Prince-Bythewood directing, though not much else is known about the film. Some character descriptions for Silver & Black have been released online, but nothing that’s official in nature. For now, the film still seems to be filling out its crew, with Black Panther and Doctor Strange team members among those who have reportedly joined the project. Now, we can confirm that at least half of that report is accurate.

Discussing Film spoke with Carter about crafting the unique look of Black Panther’s costumes. During the course of the interview, she confirmed that she has been hired by Sony to work on Silver & Black next:

“[Avengers: Infinity War] just scooped up our costumers and our costumes after we were done and just put them in their next movie. I did sign to do [Silver & Black] and Sony Pictures is actually doing it. It’s doing script re-writes right now, so I’m waiting to get the signal that I’m going back to work. I love this new genre and new area that kind of has discovered me. I just want to continue to bring something awesome to it.”

Carter has had a long career, from Do The Right Thing to Selma to working with Chadwick Boseman on both Black Panther and Marshall. Although she’s technically new to the world of modern comic book adaptations, Carter first tackled superheroes back in 1993 when she worked on the comedy The Meteor Man. Black Panther is noticeably more high profile than her previous work, and crafting the fantastical designs of the film – which borrowed from real African culture- was no doubt a different experience for her.

It’s also of note to hear that Silver & Black is currently undergoing script rewrites. Captain Marvel and Chaos Walking writers joined Silver & Black recently, further signaling that the Sony project is drawing from Marvel Studios’ pool of talent. It’s easy to read a bit into that, given the potential links between Sony’s Marvel films and the MCU. For now, however, any connection between the two franchises is rumored only and the crew behind Silver & Black are simply focusing on getting the project ready to begin filming in time to make an early 2019 release date.
