The Black Widow trailers reveal a secret Iron Man 3 connection. It’s a strange time for Marvel fans; the MCU is essentially on hold right now, with production suspended on both the films and TV shows. Even the theatrical release of Black Widow has been delayed, with Marvel choosing not to announce a new release date at this time.

Marketing for Black Widow was entering its final phase when Marvel decided to push the film back. As a result, viewers have already been shown a wealth of footage from the movie, and tie-in merchandise is already being disrupted. Naturally, that means fans are watching every single clip, attempting to intuit the future of the MCU. It’s important to remember Black Widow is the first film in the MCU’s Phase 4, meaning it presumably sets the scene for a lot of what’s to come.

Black Widow’s overarching plot is still something of a mystery. It’s set in the immediate aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, with Natasha Romanoff on the run after she helped Steve Rogers and the Winter Soldier escape. Cut off from her usual support network, Natasha somehow decides now is the right moment to take on the Red Room, the spy facility that trained her as a child. It’s unclear how all this serves as setup for Phase 4 – except for one small detail shown in the recent trailer.

Black Widow introduces Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, who in the comics was Natasha’s successor as Black Widow. The MCU’s version appears to consider Natasha as an older sister, probably indicating they worked side-by-side. Unfortunately, trailers appear to suggest Yelena Belova ends up captured by mysterious forces; there’s a single shot of her strapped to some kind of bed, and she’s wearing a costume recognizably the same as the one she dons in the final fight. Blogger Charles Murphy flipped the image, and he spotted an important acronym written on the wall next to Yelena: AIM.

AIM is short for “Advanced Idea Mechanics,” and they’re one of the most important villains in the Marvel comics universe. They were first created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby back in 1966, and they’re essentially a group of super-scientists who believe they alone have the intellectual right to rule the world. They made their MCU debut in Iron Man 3, as a privately funded think tank run by Aldrich Killian. He used AIM’s resources to develop the Extremis biotech, and then funded the Mandarin gambit in a ruthless attempt to take over the United States. They haven’t been seen since – indeed, most viewers had assumed they were shut down after Killian’s plan was foiled by Tony Stark – but it seems they’re about to return to the MCU.

AIM May Be The Real Villains Of Black Widow – Not Taskmaster

All this raises the possibility Taskmaster isn’t the real villain of Black Widow at all; rather, it could be Advanced Idea Mechanics. After all, in the comics Taskmaster is ordinarily portrayed as a mercenary and assassin-for-hire; so far, the MCU’s Taskmaster appears comic-book-accurate, so it would be surprising to see Marvel Studios deviate on this point. While it’s true marketing has suggested Taskmaster is Natasha’s main adversary, Marvel is well known for using trailers to mislead audiences. It’s possible Taskmaster isn’t the only MCU mercenary to have been working for AIM, as well, given Marvel never revealed who Crossbones was working for when he attempted to steal an unknown biological agent in Captain America: Civil War.

Still, however prominent a role AIM may play in Black Widow, one thing seems certain; they successfully capture Yelena Belova by the end of the movie. In the comics, Yelena was subjected to cybernetic experiments by Hydra, who transformed her into a Super-Adaptoid; a being who can duplicate the abilities of any superhuman she encounters. It’s possible Marvel will switch this story up a little, and have AIM be the ones who grant Yelena powers rather than Hydra.
