The games that inspired the challenging 2D metroidvania style game Blasphemous are clear to anyone who is familiar with the genre. Heavy combat mechanics, limited health flasks, checkpoints that re-spawn enemies, and so on all make up the DNA of this disturbingly beautiful game. Originally a Kickstarter project, Blasphemous has been out for almost a year now, focused on a character simply known as “The Penitent One” and his journey through the cryptic and dangerous land of Cvstodia. Now a free DLC has been released and, once again, Blasphemous has taken cues from the titles that inspired it and made it not so easy to just jump right in to the new content. If you want to know how to reach these new areas, we can show you the way.

Called The Stir of Dawn, this major content update comes with new bosses, areas, modes, and a new quest to overcome. This is all free to anyone who owns the game already, but there are some prerequisites you need to meet before you can actually start this new content.

Ascend Your Save File

Ascending is the term Blasphemous uses for New Game +, meaning if you haven’t beaten the game yet, you won’t be able to access the DLC yet. To Ascend your save file you obviously need to reach the end of the game and beat the final boss, and then select the new option on your file to “Ascend” it. If you haven’t done this before and are not aware, here’s what that means.

Ascending your file will put you back to the start of the game, but you will carry over several things. You keep all your Prayers, Relics, Rosary Beads, Hearts, and Abilities, while all Collectibles, Bile Flask Upgrades, Fervour Upgrades, Health Upgrades, and Rosary Knot Upgrades are all reset and have to be found again. One new thing you will find after starting and Ascended file is the Petrified Bell item. This is what will let you start the DLC proper.

Find Petrous

After Ascending your game you will be back at the start in the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow. Go ahead and complete the tutorial area and beat the boss again, which may end up being a good refresher if you haven’t played in a while, until you get to The Holy Line. While making your way through the second area you will reach a small dip in the ground where the Petrified Bell begins to ring. This is your cue to perform the Weight of Sin move to open up a new path to Petrous.

Speak With Jibrael

There is only one building in Jibrael right in the center of the area. You can interact with it to place your Petrified Bell and then enter to find Jibrael. After a brief conversation here he will show up five more times in different locations: Convent of Our Lady of the Charred Visage, Echoes of Salt, Archcathedral Rooftops, Wall of the Holy Prohibitions, and Hall of the Dawning. If you speak to him in any of these places you can ask him to “sing the bronze”, which will create a coffin related to an Amanecidas of the Miracle. These are the five new bosses included in the DLC.

You’re now free to explore the new zones, seeking out Jibrael at those specific spots when you feel ready to take on one of the new bosses.
