Successful Kickstarter Blasphemous blasted its religious, gothic and Metroidvania style onto PC and consoles last year. Now, Spanish developers The Game Kitchen has released a healthy update for fans of The Penitent One to embark on.

Titled ‘The Stir of Dawn’, the Blasphemous update has an impressive line-up of fresh material, accompanied by some glorious artwork that looks inspired by 80’s horror movie posters. The update’s release trailer is an exciting mix of new gameplay and illustrations that boast the game’s “new dawn.” The trailer’s symphonic power metal score carries a religious undertone whilst remaining within the confines of classic VGM. Virtually nothing could stop the announcement trailer from being visually pleasing to fans of the game, who can download the free update on August 4.

The DLC will offer a new ‘Three Penitence’ system, a revitalized map with new warp locations, new voice acting that will cater to a full Spanish language option, and additional NPCs, bosses and enemies. Buffed Prayers, Rosary Bead, and Sword Heart will receive updates as well as the reworking of animations, level art and items. The New Game+ will return sinners to their Penitent protagonist to uncover an ancestral power that has been forgotten by the Miracle. Publishers Team17 have also announced that it will be revealing more during the run-up to the DLC’s launch over on the Blasphemous Steam News Page.

Blasphemous may combine the atmospheric platforming of Metroid with the gothic style and narrative of Castlevania, but it offers its own originality too. Creative director Enrique Cabeza was inspired by the religious art of Seville, as well as Spanish painters such as Francisco de Goya. Goya’s painting, A Procession of Flagellants, was Cabeza’s main source of enlightenment when creating Blasphemous’ lore. The oil-on-panel painting, created during the early 1800’s, features Roman Catholics wearing capirotes, like the game’s protagonist. The painting also depicts penance inflicted by the individuals, with various references to Christianity.

Blasphemous received accolades from the Titanium Awards for “Best Spanish Development” and “Indie Game of the Year” last year, with a favorable response from gamers. The Stir of Dawn DLC promises a lot of great content for free, and to make matters better, there will be dog petting.
