Galakrond’s Awakening, the final solo adventure in Hearthstone’s Year of the Dragon, begins in less than a week. To start the hype, Blizzard has revealed four new cards that will eventually be released as the story unfolds. As with previous solo adventure content, four chapters will be playable, each unlocking one week apart and rewarding a total of thirty-five cards for completion of the entire adventure.

Grand Lackey Erkh

The adventure boasts four new Legendary cards, one of which is Grand Lackey Erkh, a four-mana neutral minion with two attack, three health, and card text that reads, “After you play a Lackey, add a Lackey to your hand.” It goes without saying that the introduction of the Lackey mechanic to Hearthstone has made a major impact on the game.

Given its low mana cost, it would be easy to play Grand Lackey Erkh in the mid game and still see value from its effect. In the endgame with more mana, the value to be gained from obtaining Lackey after Lackey is fantastic. Players should expect to see this card often as opponents seek to maximize the value they can get from their deck.

Aeon Reaver

Aeon Reaver is a six-mana Dragon minion for the Priest class that has four attack and health, and card text that reads, “Battlecry: Deal damage to a minion equal to its Attack.” It is difficult to estimate how useful or not this new card will be. On the one hand, Dragon Priest is always an archetype of deck that players try to make and is still a viable midrange option in Wild format. On the other hand, since most minions in the game have more health than attack, this is less straight removal and more condition removal to target already damaged minions on the board, but its own relatively weak body for its mana cost is a major strike against it.

Winged Guardian

Winged Guardian is a seven mana Beast for the Druid class with card text that reads, Taunt, Reborn. Can’t be targeted by spells or Hero Powers.” This is a perfect example of a card that stands on its own and looks quite good, which is why it will be a strong pick in Arena drafts. With the current year-end power level we are seeing now however, this card simply will not cut it because it is too fair. Following the rotation of last years set, this may earn a spot in Druid decks as more powerful cards leave the Standard format and head to Wild.

Air Raid

Air Raid is a Paladin spell that reads, “Twinspell. Summon two 1/1 Silver Hand Recruits with Taunt.” Apart from Token Druid and Zoolock deck archetypes, Paladins always benefit from the ability to generate many tokens quickly, though once again, not with the current power level we are seeing in the meta. The current best Paladin decks are Mech and Holy Wrath archetypes, and Air Raid does not fit into the strategy of either of those decks.

In Wild however this might be quite useful as another way of generating a strong board in a single turn. Playing Air Raid and its Twinspell followed by Sunkeeper Tarim would result in an established board and would only require two cards. Following this year’s rotation, there may be a spot in Standard for Air Raid, but not right now.
