Netflix released their South African original series Blood & Water in May of 2020 and had everyone talking. The show follows a South African high school student named Puleng who believes that she may have solved the mystery of her sister’s disappearance. Puleng has struggled her entire life with living in the shadow of her older sister, Phumelele, who was kidnapped at birth. Her parents struggled to move past this and as the show opens, new revelations about her disappearance re-open these old wounds as Puleng sets out to find out if she can track down her long lost sister.

The first season of Blood & Water only had six episodes and ended on a major cliffhanger, leaving many people to wonder about the future of Puleng, Fikile, and the other characters in the series. Unfortunately, viewers will have to wait until the release of the second season of this South African family drama to find out what happens after the big finale of the first season. Luckily, there are a ton of other dramatic TV families viewers can watch in the meantime.

10 Queen Sugar (2016 – )

Queen Sugar is a dramatic series created by Ava DuVernay that began airing in 2016. Queen Sugar follows a group of estranged siblings who are all forced to come together in order to travel to Lousiana in order to receive their inheritance from their deceased father.

This inheritance includes the large sugarcane farm that had been run by their father until his death. The siblings have to set aside their personal lives, each of which is very different from the other two, in order to come together once more to run the farm.

9 Big Little Lies (2017 – 2019)

Big Little Lies aired from 2017 through 2019. The series was originally a miniseries, but was expanded to have a second season before the show finished. The series is based on a novel by the same name and is set in the coastal town of Monterey, California.

Shown on HBO, Big Little Lies follows a group of mothers who all live in Monterey and are connected through the fact that their children go to the same school. This series delves into the drama that goes on with the residents of this town and within the families of each of the Mothers of Monterey, including parenting problems, rumors, and even murder.

8 Outer Banks (2020 – )

Outer Banks is a Netflix original teen drama that premiered on the streaming service in 2020. The series follows a group of friends who live in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in a small town where everyone is divided into two different social groups, primarily based on their wealth and social status.

For the most part, the series follows teenager named John B and his best friends as they work together to try to solve the mystery of a massive, historical shipwreck and buried treasure that John B’s father had spent much of his life trying to track the location of. With steamy relationships, small town gossip, and some serious familial betrayal at work, it’s no surprise that this series caught the Internet’s attention.

7 The Haunting Of Hill House (2018 – )

Netflix’s original horror series The Haunting of Hill House is based on the Shirley Jackson novel by the same name. The series follows a family that has a long and complicated history with a home that they lived in as children and are forced to return to as adults.

Although this is definitely a horror series, not all of the ghosts and demons that are haunting these siblings are of the supernatural variety. After they’re forced to return to their childhood home, they learn that some of their darkest demons are actually simply in their minds.

6 Shameless (2011 – )

The American version of Shameless is an adaption of the British series by the same name. This series started airing in 2011 and follows the incredibly dysfunctional Gallagher family. The family is lead by single father Frank who has six children but spends much of his time out at the bar instead of taking care of his family.

Because of this, the oldest Gallagher child has taken on a sort of mothering role to her younger siblings. The series follows all the drama that the family gets up to, sometimes in a comedic way and sometimes in a way that really tugs at the viewers’ heartstrings.

5 Chambers (2019)

Netflix’s original dramatic series Chambers follows a teenage girl named Sasha who had a sudden heart attack. In order to save her life, she was given the heart of another teenage girl from the area who had died the same night that she suffered her heart attack. Although this should be good news and Sasha should be able to return to her life as it was before, but that’s not how things go.

Shortly after receiving the heart, Sasha begins to experience things she can’t explain. In order to try to find answers, Sasha reaches out to the family of the girl whose heart she was given, thinking that getting to know them and learning more about her donor will help her to make sense of the things she’s been seeing, feeling, and thinking.

4 The Sopranos (1999 – 2007)

The irreplaceable crime drama The Sopranos aired on HBO from 1999 through 2007 and is a series about a completely different type of family. Although there is a lot of drama with Tony Soprano’s blood relatives throughout the series, the show is entirely focused on the mob family that this New Jersey father and mob boss is a part of.

The stress of trying to manage the mob and be a father to his children lands Tony Soprano in a therapist’s office and things only get more dramatic from there.

3 White Lines (2020 – )

Another Netflix original, White Lines premiered on the streaming service in 2020. The series follows a woman named Zoe who is forced to leave her life as she knows it behind after her brother’s disappearance. In order to try to solve the mystery of where her brother has gone, she travels to Ibiza with the hopes of tracking him down.

Once Zoe arrives in the place that her DJ brother was last seen in, she quickly becomes entangled in something much more dangerous than she expected.

2 Sharp Objects (2018)

HBO’s Sharp Objects is a miniseries that aired in 2018 for one season. The series is based on a novel by the same name and follows a journalist named Camille who is forced to travel back to her small hometown in order to investigate a string of heinous murders that have taken place there.

Once there, Camille has to come face to face with her dark past and realizes that the murders ravaging the town’s teen girls might not be the biggest problem she finds there.

1 Pretty Little Liars (2010 – 2017)

The famous Pretty Little Liars is a twisty teen mystery that aired from 2010 through 2017. The series follows a group of estranged friends who are forced to come back together after they become the targets of messages from a strange, anonymous figure that seems to know things about them that only one person knew.

The problem is that the person who they had told these secrets to went missing a year ago. Each character, including Alison who went missing, has their own family with their own intense brand of familial drama.
