Bloodborne isn’t on PC yet, but a demake of the first area is launching for free on January 31 next year. With the PSX emulator in hand, you can get a taste of Central Yharnam complete with retro sound effects, older stylized versions of the music, and even a CRT filter. It’s just like the good old days.

Lilith Walter and Corwyn Prichard started development on Bloodborne PSX nearly a year ago, but it picked up steam around January when new footage was shown of the hunter parrying and riposting a werewolf. That sounds bog-standard for Bloodborne, but the PS1 models and archaic jank hooked onlookers. It was an intriguing insight into what the game would’ve looked like had it launched in FromSoftware’s King’s Field and Armored Core days.

Shortly after, the duo released a video showing the Father Gascoigne boss fight. It featured a completely remade cutscene and his werewolf phase where he tears through graves. Evidently, it retains a lot of the modernness of Bloodborne despite being designed as a PS1 game, showing the capabilities of Sony’s debut generation. The trailer below gives us a glimpse at the talent going into the project and just how far it has come since January.

The demake has a similar gothic atmosphere to the PS4 game but the older music combined with the archaic visuals lend itself to being more Resident Evil and Devil May Cry than Dark Souls.

The entirety of the first area is on display with the trailer’s open showing us the ogival bridge and full moon, familiar sights for anyone who has played the game.

For returning players, this is a fresh way to experience Bloodborne for the first time in six years. For those who have never tried it, this is the perfect time to get a taste. After all, Sony might port it to PC one of these days.

We’ve seen similar demakes in the past. For instance, Half-Life 2 is currently being rebuilt in the first game’s engine, and the team has managed to create a working gravity gun in spite of the limitations. Bloodborne PSX, meanwhile, is built in the Unity Engine to be playable with a PS1 emulator – maybe we’ll even get to see the new Spider-Man games in the style of the originals.
