One of the promised stretch goals for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is no longer happening, as the roguelike dungeon is being replaced with a Randomizer mode.

The Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Kickstarter was a huge success, bringing in over five and a half million dollars from backers. One of the last stretch goals was hit when the funding reached five million dollars, which was for a roguelike dungeon with random item layouts and room placement.

It seems that the fans who were excited to play the roguelike Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night dungeon are out of luck. According to a new update on the official Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Kickstarter page, the code for the game isn’t compatible for a roguelike dungeon (because it’s not like they bothered to prepare for their five million dollar milestone feature or anything), especially when it comes to random dungeon layouts. As such, the dungeon has been scrapped and replaced with a Randomizer mode.

The Randomizer mode will allow the player to start a game with the ability to select options from eight different parameters. These options include shuffling the key items, mixing up the warp rooms, mixing up the items and enemy drops, changing the rewards for quests, and giving the player random rewards for crafting. There will also be safety checks in place to prevent the player from being able to softlock their game. The Randomizer mode is expected to launch alongside the Zangetsu DLC, but it doesn’t have a release date as of yet.

It’s disappointing that such a key stretch goal won’t be implemented into Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, especially as it marked such an impressive milestone for the game’s Kickstarter. The Randomizer mode is nice, but it’s not what fans were expecting. It might make the game more exciting for streamers, but it’s not the true roguelike experience that fans want. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night was one of the few Kickstarter games that lived up to the promise of its original pitch (unless you played it on Nintendo Switch at launch) and it’s a shame that there has been such a slow rollout of updates and new content since it was released.
