Ahsoka Tano made her live-action debut in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 5, “Chapter 13: The Jedi,” and now shares a Star Wars appearance record with Boba Fett, which he himself set earlier in the season. Ahsoka and Boba are two major fan-favorites, and now The Mandalorian has brought them both into the realm of live-action TV. Boba Fett was confirmed to have survived the sarlacc and returned in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 1, “Chapter 9: The Marshal”, with Temuera Morrison in the role, before Rosario Dawson brought Ahsoka to life in “The Jedi.”

Ahsoka in particular played a significant part in The Mandalorian. In addition to impressing with her Force powers and wielding her two white lightsabers, she also made some deeper connections to Star Wars lore, including references to Anakin Skywalker’s downfall and revealing Baby Yoda’s real name – Grogu – and backstory from during the Clone Wars era. Boba Fett’s appearance was much smaller, since he only appeared briefly at the end of the episode, but in both cases there’s clear set up for more, be it in The Mandalorian or spin-off shows for the respective characters. Either way, that would only advance their considerable records.

As it stands, Ahsoka Tano and Boba Fett are the only Star Wars characters to appear in all aspects of canon materials and mediums: movies, animated TV shows, live-action TV, books, comics, and video games. Boba Fett, of course, is among the longest-running active Star Wars characters, having first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back (the Holiday Special doesn’t count, thankfully) before his death in Return of the Jedi. As well as his backstory being fleshed-out in the prequels, Boba also appeared in several episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, novels such as Dark Disciple (as well as his return being set up in Aftermath), his own one-shot comic book – Age of Rebellion: Boba Fett 1 – and appearances in several others, and the video games Star Wars: Battlefront and Battlefront II.

Like Boba Fett, Ahsoka made her Star Wars debut in a movie, although one the merits of which are a little more debatable. Ahsoka was introduced as Anakin’s Padawan in 2008’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the feature film that served as the pilot for the show that she’d go on to have a starring role in, before also appearing in another animated series, Star Wars Rebels. Ahsoka didn’t appear in any of the live-action Star Wars movies, but she was heard in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, among the Jedi voice cameos heard by Rey on Exegol. Outside the movies and shows, Ahsoka starred in her own eponymous novel, 2016’s Ahsoka, which focuses on her time after leaving the Jedi Order. She’s also made appearances in comic books such as Jedi of the Republic and Age of Republic, while her video game appearances are a little looser in terms of canon: she’s featured in several mobile games, including Galactic Defense and Force Arena, which are tangentially linked to continuity, as well as being mentioned in DLC for Star Wars: Battlefront II.

That it is Boba Fett and Ahsoka Tano who share this Star Wars record is particularly fascinating. Neither are major characters in the way the likes of Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker are, but they’ve both proved their longevity. They’re also characters who are well-connected to many others, through things like bounty hunting or leaving the Jedi Order and working with Mandalorians, making them almost uniquely suited to appear in so many differing mediums. Boba and Ahsoka are also two fan-favorites, but of different times: Boba Fett is the pre-Disney era fan-favorite, where his sarlacc survival and further adventures contributed to enhancing his legend, making him more than just a cool costume. In the post-Disney era, then Ahsoka has essentially become the face of Star Wars animation, and hugely beloved because of how her character has developed. With both of them appearing in The Mandalorian, it further illustrates how the show brings all eras of Star Wars – and its fans – together.
