Boba Fett Will Struggle Replacing Jabba As Crime Boss Says Jon Favreau

The Book of Boba Fett co-creator Jon Favreau teases that Boba Fett will struggle replacing Jabba the Hutt as crime boss on Tatooine. The upcoming Star Wars series picks up from The Mandalorian season 2 finale as Temuera Morrison’s titular bounty hunter and the assassin in his service, Fennec Shand, killed Bib Fortuna and took over Jabba’s Palace on Tatooine. The show will follow Boba and Fennec as they struggle to establish themselves as the new leaders of the crime world with Jabba and Bib now dead.

Morrison leads the cast of The Book of Boba Fett alongside Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand, reprising her role from The Mandalorian, and Jennifer Beals as an unidentified Twi’lek. Development on the Star Wars series began was largely kept under wraps until The Mandalorian season 2 finale in which the post-credits sequence of the series revealed the show’s plan for a 2021 release, taking over from the Pedro Pascal-led series as development on season 3 continued. The Book of Boba Fett is currently gearing up for its release and now new insight into the series is coming from one of the creatives behind the show.

With just over a month to go until the show’s arrival, Favreau spoke with Empire to discuss The Book of Boba Fett. The co-creator revealed that Jabba’s death in Return of the Jedi has left “a power vacuum” in the criminal underworld on Tatooine and that Boba Fett will struggle to replace him as crime boss in the series. “Jabba was clearly a very strong and imposing leader, who people were very scared of, and who seemed to rule with an iron fist. You pull somebody like that out of the ecosystem of Tatooine – and Hutt Space in general – and you have the opportunity that’s ripe in the gangster genre. Although Boba Fett is a very experienced bounty hunter, he’s not experienced at running a criminal syndicate or managing forces. He’s not normally a newcomer. He’s an expert as we see him in most areas. But in this case, he’s trying to transition to another position. We’ll see a lot more of his true character in this season.”

The return of Boba Fett in The Mandalorian season 2 after plenty of theories from the debut season left many eager to see what the future would hold for the character in The Book of Boba Fett. Favreau’s explanation that the “experienced bounty hunter” is going to struggle to fill the void left by Jabba points towards plenty of high-stakes storytelling for Boba’s rise to power, including his willingness to get his hands dirty in order to establish his dominance. The first Book of Boba Fett trailer certainly indicated plenty of the latter, with director and executive producer Robert Rodriguez sure to add plenty of flair to the action sequences as seen in The Mandalorian season 2’s “Chapter 14: The Tragedy,” where Morrison’s character properly returned to the fold.

It’s also interesting to note that Favreau describes The Book of Boba Fett as exploring the gangster genre in its exploration of the power vacuum left by Jabba’s death. The show would mark Favreau’s return to the genre since his directorial debut Made and cameo in The Sopranos, creating a point of curiosity as to how the series will seek to balance the gangster formula with that of the Star Wars’ Western-influenced formula. Only time will tell when The Book of Boba Fett premieres on Disney+ on December 29.
