Boruto Finally Reveals Jiraiyas True Relation To Kashin Koji

The truth is finally out regarding Kashin Koji’s identity and his connection to Jiraiya in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. Set during the reign of the Seventh Hokage, Boruto has introduced several long-running storylines that send seismic shock waves through the wider Naruto franchise. From Jigen and Karma to the Boruto vs. Kawaki flash-forward, the sequel manga evidently has little interest in half-measures. One of the most hotly discussed mysteries among Boruto fans, however, has been the true identity of Kashin Koji, and why he’s so reminiscent of Jiraiya – Naruto’s mentor and the self-styled “pervy sage” from the original series.

Originally introduced as a member of the evil Kara faction, Kashin Koji immediately attracted attention due to his striking visual similarity to Jiraiya. The plot thickened when Kashin Koji began using techniques straight from the Jiraiya playbook, including Toad Summons and the Rasengan. Koji even spoke of Konoha village in familiar terms, and his chakra failed to trigger the security system, suggesting he was once connected to Naruto’s hometown. Along with Amado, Boruto revealed Kashin Koji as a double agent, working for Kara but ultimately intending to take down its leader, Isshiki Otsutsuki.

Boruto: Kashin Koji Is A Clone Of Jiraiya

When Kashin Koji finally went head-to-head against Jigen (the vessel of Isshiki Otsutsuki), it was only a matter of time before Amado’s Jiraiya secret was unraveled and, though Boruto episode 214 is less clear about it, chapter 47 of the manga shockingly confirms that Kashin Koji is a clone of Jiraiya. The character’s face is also shown in full for the first time after Jigen destroys Kashin Koji’s mask, making the physical similarities to Jiraiya even more obvious. Kashin Koji appears considerably younger than his biological predecessor, but the red eye marks and nose mole are unmistakable, confirming suspicions many fans already had after noting the white mane of hair and fighting style.

When Kashin Koji arrived in Boruto, three main theories arose: he was either Jiraiya’s son, Jiraiya himself, or a Jiraiya clone. The final option is definitely the least problematic, and fans will be relieved that Boruto hasn’t diluted Jiraiya’s story by bringing him back to life or introducing a secret lovechild (which wouldn’t exactly be a surprise, but still…). Nevertheless, Boruto’s clone reveal does raise some franchise-shaking questions. In the original Naruto story, Jiraiya’s death came at the hands of Pain, who promptly tossed the corpse into the ocean. Jiraiya was then one of the very few characters not brought back by Kabuto’s Edo Tensei in the Fourth Great Ninja War. In the manga, Kabuto was told resurrecting Jiraiya wasn’t necessary, but the anime actually claimed his body was irretrievable, so how and when did Amado’s clone come about?

Evidently, Amado has obtained a sample of Jiraiya’s DNA somehow, but Boruto hasn’t yet confirmed whether the Kara scientist recovered the body in its entirety (no great feat considering what else goes on in the world of Naruto and Boruto), or merely created Kashin Koji from a smaller sample Jiraiya left behind – a strand of hair, stray toenail clipping, etc. Jigen correctly deduces that Amado chose Jiraiya as Kashin Koji’s template because of the Sannin’s hopeful outlook and resolute belief that peace was possible. Since Amado is heavily inspired by Jiraiya’s philosophy in Boruto, is it possible that Jiraiya himself knew about Kashin Koji’s creation, and gave his DNA voluntarily?

More important than the method of Kashin Koji’s birth is his future in the Boruto story. After being crushed by Jigen, Kashin Koji barely escapes via a well-timed Toad Summoning Technique, but as of Boruto chapter 62, the character is yet to return. With Naruto already noticing Kashin Koji’s similarity to Jiraiya, Boruto needs to explore the Seventh Hokage’s reaction to seeing a clone of his deceased master, while Kashin Koji must still confront Amado, who cruelly used him as a pawn in the fight against Jigen. Hopefully, Kashin Koji will return to Boruto in the near future, and hasn’t fallen victim to the manga’s change of direction after Masashi Kishimoto returned as writer.
