One inventive Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild player has discovered a way to use ice arrows that will actually save their in-game horses from certain death. Breath of the Wild’s Kingdom of Hyrule is vast. From the sweltering core of Death Mountain to the freezing heights of the Gerudo Highlands, there is so much to explore in BotW. With such a sweeping landscape, traversal is a key part of any Breath of the Wild playthrough. But while the Sheikah towers found in each region and the many shrines that are scattered throughout Hyrule do offer handy teleportation points for players, there are times when getting from A to B has to be done manually. And at times like these, horses are a valuable asset to players.

The horses in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild vary. Some are easy to catch, but are slow and lack stamina. Others, such as the Giant Horse found in the Taobab Grasslands, are a harder to catch but have incredible strength. Once tamed, the horses in Breath of the Wild can be taken to any one of the world’s stables, and there they will be given a bridle and saddle. Players can then name their horses, and the bond between these steads and Link often becomes a special part of Breath of the Wild’s gameplay.

But alas, these horses are not invincible. A horse can die in Breath of the Wild if struck by enemies, and if a horse falls from a great height, the chances of it surviving said fall are slim. However, one BOTW player has discovered a way to prevent this from happening. A Reddit post from TheAmazingDraco showed off their incredible, horse-saving, discovery. Taking their horse for flying leap off the Tabantha Great Bridge, TheAmazingDraco waits until their horse is about halfway through its fall and then proceeds to freeze the steed in mid-air with an ice arrow. Rather than shattering into millions of icy pieces on impact, as would be expected, the horse remains a flawless glistening statue until the effects of the ice arrow wear off. TheAmazingDraco’s horse is understandably disgruntled after this ordeal, but alive nonetheless.

This discovery will surely please one of Breath of the Wild’s more eccentric NPCs. The Horse God Malanya, who can be found near to the Highland Stable, will allow Link to revive a dead horse. However, Malanya does allude to it being displeased if a horse is killed by a player’s ‘vile intent’; something that deliberately walking one’s horse off a cliff edge or bridge would likely include.

Now fans are patiently waiting for more news on Breath of the Wild’s mysterious sequel. Thankfully, there is clearly still plenty to discover within the most recent, original, Zelda release. Additionally, with Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask now both available through NSO, there are plenty of ways for fans to keep getting their Zelda fix ahead of Breath of the Wild 2’s release next year.
