A skilled The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild player has found a way to increase updraft winds threefold, allowing players to get to even higher places using only Revali’s Gale, Spicy Peppers, and Fire Arrows. Released in 2017, Nintendo’s critically acclaimed addition to the Zelda game franchise continues to captivate players thanks to its detailed, systemic open-world design, allowing them to discover Hyrule at their own pace and create their own fun.

Revali’s Gale is a Champion ability that can be acquired in Breath of the Wild, and it’s one of the game’s most unique mechanics. The ability was once used by Revali, Hyrule’s late Rito Champion, and is given to Link upon defeating Windblight Ganon and restoring the Divine Beast Vah Medoh. Upon activation, Revali’s Gale creates an updraft of wind that launches the player skyward, which can greatly aid Link when attempting to scale the game’s varied terrain (especially during rain). In addition to the Champion abilities, Hyrule’s hero may be able to do even more in the upcoming sequel, with Nintendo may have teased a time travel power for Breath of the Wild 2 in its gameplay reveal trailer.

A video by Reddit user tetr4_hc demonstrates a simple trick that can be used to updraft several times while gliding, enabling Link to get to extra heights. They begin by placing five Spicy Peppers on the ground in front of them before activating Revali’s Gale to create an updraft and launch Link into the sky. Accompanied by the peppers, Fire Arrows are then used to ignite three of them, with the resulting flames making the updraft go higher. This method was repeated once more with the remaining peppers for a total of three updrafts. For those wanting to replicate the trick, it should be noted that tetr4_hc cleverly shoots the Fire Arrows off to the side to avoid hitting the Spicy Peppers directly, as a direct shot would result in a small explosion igniting all of the peppers at once.

Even more than four years later, Breath of the Wild players continue to find interesting new ways to travel across the game’s open world, with another fan recently discovering BOTW’s strange bomb glitch which allows Link to fly without a Paraglider. The odd glitch requires a series of complex inputs to set up, which involve rapidly picking up and switching between Link’s Remote Bomb rune, shield, and bow. While the bug may take a few tries to set up in comparison to tetr4_hc’s simple updraft trick, the end result allows the player to freely fly around without worrying about their stamina bar depleting.

The Breath of the Wild community seems to be far from done finding new ways to play the game. Tetr4_hc’s updraft trick could no doubt make scaling Hyrule’s numerous mountains much easier, and other players will have plenty of time to master this maneuver while they wait for Breath of the Wild 2’s 2022 release date.
