The expansive kingdom of Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is essentially one big puzzle waiting to be solved, but after four years, most of its mysteries have been uncovered. That’s why a passionate group of fans is creating Breath of the Wild Second Wind, a mod that will vastly expand the game’s scope.

Fans have long been creating Breath of the Wild mods, added features from new outfits and items to ray tracing and 8K resolution support. Second Wind is expected to blow many other fan-made additions out of the water with its sheer size and expansion to the original game’s story.

According to the Second Wind Wiki, the mod is a community effort being developed for both the Nintendo Wii U and Switch versions of Breath of the Wild, but it is currently only available on Wii U and the Cemu Wii U emulator. The mod will be split into two separate parts, the first of which is currently in development, while work on the second has yet to begin. Here’s what to expect from both parts of Second Wind.

What BOTW’s Second Wind Mod Adds To The Game

The first half of the Breath of the Wild Second Wind mod, titled The Ancient Trials, will introduce eight new explorable areas, including a central hub called Ordon Village. Other notable additions include a Blacksmiths system, adapted from another mod called the Crafting Project. This adds blacksmiths and anvils that let players craft weapons, potentially solving BOTW’s much-hated weapon durability system. Second Wind will also visually revamp the game’s 120 Shrines and “may” alter the puzzles and enemies hidden inside them. Along with these bigger additions come a number of others:

  • 15 side quests
  • 38 recipes
  • 28 animals
  • 30 weapons
  • Hand-to-hand combat
  • 35 armor pieces
  • Eight enemy types
  • 13 bosses
  • The mask and Gossip Stone systems from Ocarina of Time
  • New music for Kass
  • Survival mechanics
  • A harder endgame
  • Rebalanced horse stats

No information is publicly available about the second portion of Second Wind, titled The Ancient Island. Its name suggests it could involve a new landmass located off the southern or eastern coast of Hyrule. Currently, there’s no release date for the finished version of this massive The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild mod, and – as it’s being developed in a piecemeal fashion by fans in their free time – it could still be a while before it’s ready for launch.
