Should Metroid ever be adapted for the big screen, Brie Larson wants to play Samus Aran. This isn’t the first time the Captain Marvel actress has expressed interest in the role. Back in 2018, Larson posted a Halloween picture in the Zero Suit Samus costume, later saying she wants to make a Metroid film. Metroid follows the adventures of a space bounty hunter named Samus Aran. One of Nintendo’s bigger franchises, Metroid has received a number of games over the years. One of the most esteemed is Super Metroid for the SNES.
There, Samus journeys to planet Zebes, battling monstrous foes such as Ridley and Kraid. The final encounter is a memorable battle against the sinister Mother Brain. One of the most highly anticipated video games with no release date is Metroid Prime 4. Simply put, Metroid is associated with quality gameplay and a notable lead character. Many fans would argue Metroid is the perfect series for a live-action adaptation. With unique alien environments and enemies, a film would certainly grab people’s attention. A challenge is deciding who should play Samus. If Brie Larson had her way, she would be putting on the Varia Suit.
In an episode of Animal Talking (via Game Rant), the talk show within Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Brie Larson was featured. The subject of Metroid came up, with Larson responding, “I would love that so much,” to the idea of playing protagonist Samus Aran. Larson stated, “She was always my character that I played in Super Smash Bros., and I just loved her. I definitely want to make that movie, definitely want to participate in that. So Nintendo, once again, I’d love to do it.”
Larson also discussed her Halloween costume, which is where all the Samus talk originated. Popular artist BossLogic crafted a piece in 2018 depicting Larson as the Metroid character, showing how the actress could look in a potential role. Samus is typically portrayed as a quiet, get-the-job-done character. However, there are times when one sees a more emotional side to her. This is prevalent in Metroid: Other M and also seen in the Metroid manga. It would be an interesting challenge bringing Samus to life. Larson is an experienced actress and seems to have a deep appreciation for the character, so she could be a good choice if a Metroid movie is ever put into development.
Sadly, there is no word on any kind of Metroid movie right now. However, Nintendo is currently working with Illumination on a Super Mario film. This doesn’t necessarily mean a Metroid movie is coming anytime soon. But, the fact Nintendo is all for a new Mario movie being made could potentially lead to other franchises getting the Hollywood treatment. If Brie Larson plays Samus, that could be the actress’ biggest role outside of Captain Marvel, making the idea of a movie even more exciting.
