Brooklyn Nine-Nine: 5 Times We Felt Bad For Amy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

Amy Santiago is quite the complex character who brings her own thing to Brooklyn Nine-Nine. At times, we felt bad for her, others, we hated her guts.

Brooklyn NineNine 5 Times We Felt Bad For Amy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of those sitcoms that really succeed based on the strength of its characters. Though each of the men and women who work there have their own quirks and foibles, things that make audiences love them and others that are downright infuriating. That is definitely true of one Amy Santiago, definitely one of the precinct’s most anxious and compulsive members.

There have been quite a few times throughout the show that Amy has invited the viewer to sympathize with or feel bad for her, just as there have been numerous times when it’s been very hard to like her.

10 Felt Bad: When She Had Trouble Getting Pregnant

Brooklyn NineNine 5 Times We Felt Bad For Amy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

After Jake and Amy get married, they decide that they want to try to have a baby together. Unfortunately, despite all of their best efforts (and despite all of the exhaustive planning that Amy puts into it, including rigorously mapping out her fertility cycle), they really struggle to succeed.

It’s hard not to feel sorry for both Amy and Jake, as the one thing that they want is the one thing that they can’t seem to achieve.

9 Hated Her: When She Tried To Cook Thanksgiving

Brooklyn NineNine 5 Times We Felt Bad For Amy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

One of the running gags of the series focuses on Amy’s absolute inability to cook. This is itself rather surprising, especially given that she’s so competent in so many other aspects of her life.

However, what’s more than a little irritating about this fact is that she stubbornly refuses to believe that she can’t, in fact, cook anything to save her life. At Thanksgiving, for example, she uses baking soda instead of salt (since by her logic they are both white powders).

8 Felt Bad: When The Wedding Started To Fall Apart

Brooklyn NineNine 5 Times We Felt Bad For Amy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

The wedding between Jake and Amy was one of the most eagerly-awaited moments in the show’s history. After all, this was the moment that the romance had been building up to almost from the first episode.

Given that it’s Jake and Amy, however, things quickly began to go awry, thanks in no small part to the fact that someone called in a bomb threat to the venue. Though the wedding ended up being a success, it was easy to feel sorry for Amy for most of the episode.

7 Hated Her: That Time She Faked Being Pregnant To Win A Heist

Brooklyn NineNine 5 Times We Felt Bad For Amy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

There’s no question that, despite the fact that they love one another, Jake and Amy are also fiercely competitive in almost every single aspect of their lives.

However, even given their desire to one-up one another in almost everything, Amy faking that she’s pregnant to win a heist is something of a low even for her. It’s especially irritating when one sees the look of absolute joy that comes across Jake’s face when she tells him that she’s pregnant.

6 Felt Bad: When She Freaked Out About The Sergeant’s Exam

Brooklyn NineNine 5 Times We Felt Bad For Amy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

Amy is one of those people who is incredibly competent and ambitious. There’s no challenge that Amy isn’t willing (and often able) to conquer. Thus, it’s not really surprising that she would want to become a sergeant, and so she decides to take the exam.

However, she almost crumbles under the pressure, and it’s only when Jake reminds her of just how smart and competent that she is that she’s able to go through with it. It’s easy to feel sorry for her at this moment for who, after all, hasn’t felt overwhelmed at one time or another?

5 Hated Her: When She And Jake Insulted Teddy And Almost Ruined The Audit

Brooklyn NineNine 5 Times We Felt Bad For Amy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

Amy’s relationship with Teddy was one of those storylines that ended up going nowhere, both because Teddy was boring and because Amy was secretly in love with Jake.

Unfortunately, in a later episode, Teddy is in charge of auditing the Nine-Nine, and because neither Amy nor Jake can keep a lid on their disagreements, they almost ruin the entire audit. It’s one of those moments where the audience is led to see that Amy has a disagreeable side that sometimes gets the better of her.

4 Felt Bad: That Time She Screwed Up Meeting Holt’s Mother

Brooklyn NineNine 5 Times We Felt Bad For Amy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

Amy makes no secret of the fact that she admires Captain Holt more than almost anyone else. Unfortunately, this means that sometimes she lets her sycophantic impulses get the better of her.

Even by her own standards, however, her flubbing of her introduction to Captain Holt’s mother is one for the record books. Still, one can’t help but feel sorry for her after she messes up and Jake is invited to meet Holt’s mother rather than herself.

3 Hated Her: How Easily She Dismissed Jake Early In The Show Even Though It Was Obvious He Was A Good Detective

Brooklyn NineNine 5 Times We Felt Bad For Amy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

Throughout most of the early seasons, the show followed the typical sitcom formula of having the eventual couple be rather antagonistic toward one another. Time and again, Amy dismisses Jake, despite the fact that she can clearly see that, his childish demeanor aside, he’s actually a very good detective.

It’s one of those instances that makes it clear that there are times when Amy likes feeling morally superior to other people (even if it’s not a very good look on her).

2 Felt Bad: Always Being Outshone By Her Brother

Brooklyn NineNine 5 Times We Felt Bad For Amy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

Fans of the series were ecstatic when it was revealed that the famous Lin-Manuel Miranda would be guest-starring on the show as Amy’s brother. Very quickly, however, it was made clear that he’s a bit of a jerk and, far worse, that he’s actually made a habit of outshining Amy in every aspect of her life.

Given how hard Amy always tries to be the best at everything, it’s rather sad to see the way that she desperately wants to outdo her brother in something.

1 Hated Her: When She Was Mad At Rosa For Being Offered The Captain’s Job In A Small Police Department

Most of the time Amy proves herself to be a good friend, the type of person that you can rely on. Ever so often, however, she lets her own ego get in the way of her friendship, as when she grew almost pathologically jealous of the fact that Rosa was being offered the captain’s job at a small police department.

Rather than being happy for her friend (who ended up not taking the job, anyway), she gave in to her worst impulses.
