Sheila Atim is the breakout star of Bruised, but there are other movies and TV shows viewers might know her from. The directorial debut of Halle Berry tells the story of a former MMA fighter who gets another shot at glory. Berry is easily the most recognizable star in Bruised’s cast of characters as she plays the lead role of Jackie Justice, but the film also features a potential star-making performance from Sheila Atim.
Bruised introduces Atim as a fight trainer named Buddhakan. She works with MMA owner Immaculate (Shamier Anderson) and is the person he sends Jackie to meet to begin preparing for her fight with one of the world’s best female MMA fighters. Buddhakan and Jackie quickly form a friendship as they train, and Sheila Atim’s Bruised character routinely helps Jackie in other ways as well. This leads to Buddhakan and Jackie’s relationship becoming romantic, even though Jackie ultimately pushes her away before the final fight. It gives the up-and-coming actor a prominent role throughout the Netflix 2021 movie, and she doesn’t waste the opportunity to deliver a great performance.
Although Bruised is one of Sheila Atim’s biggest movie roles to date, the 30-year-old Ugandan-born British actress has been performing for years. She got her start on the stage and has already been recognized for incredible performances in various productions. This includes starring in the Donmar Warehouse’s all-female Shakespeare trilogy in 2016 and playing Marianne Laine in 2018’s production of Girl from the North Country, which resulted in Atim winning the 2018 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress. Due to the limited accessibility of these great Atim performances, viewers might recognize her most from The Underground Railroad. Barry Jenkins’ 2021 series for Amazon Prime Video included Sheila Atim playing Mabel, who has a powerful story in the show.

Sheila Atim was also supposed to join the Game of Thrones franchise, but the pilot she worked on did not move forward at HBO.
Now that Sheila Atim has her breakout movie role with Bruised, it should lead to her landing other major roles in the future. She currently has booked a few different projects that will come out in the next few years. This includes playing Signora Vitelli in Robert Zemeckis’ live-action Pinocchio movie starring Tom Hanks coming to Disney+ in 2022, which will no doubt increase the star’s visibility even further. Atim will also appear in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King, a historical epic that stars Viola Davis, Lashana Lynch, and John Boyega.
