We got our first look at Destiny 2’s upcoming crossplay feature when it accidentally went live near the end of May. After that, Bungie did a beta test where players could take part in mixed fireteam strikes for some extra rewards.

Now we’re on the final stretch. Bungie has confirmed in yesterday’s blog update that crossplay is for sure coming in early Season 15, and now we know what features will be coming along with it.

first up: Bungie Names. In order for crossplay to work at all, everyone needs a unique name in order for people to find one another. Bungie names will work a lot like Discord names in that they’ll be your current screen name with a four-digit number on the end preceded by the hashtag symbol.

You can see an example of how Bungie Names will work in the screenshot below. Bungie will generally allow people to keep their current screen names on whatever platform they are, but you won’t be able to pick the numbers at the end. Bungie will also be running an offensive term filter and an invalid character filter prior to implementing Bungie names, which could result in some players being given the generic handle of Guardian#[Random Number].

If your current name in Destiny 2 has an offensive term or special character, it’s highly advised to think of a new name before Season 15 goes live. Bungie has told us that a name change feature won’t be available until months after crossplay launches, so consider this fair warning.

The next thing that’ll change is the Roster screen, which will display friends using Bungie Names and also allow you to convert your platform friends in Bungie Friends, the new crossplay friends list. You can also add Bungie Friends via the invite screen or Bungie.net/friends.

Fireteam invitations are now being added to the in-game infrastructure, which will require going to the Roster screen to accept invitations. Fireteam Finder, a feature for finding fireteam members for higher-tier content and is currently only available on the Bungie website, will also be added to the Roster screen to make it easier for players to join a raid or Nightfall group.

For matchmaking, PvP content will continue to separate PC players, but console players (and Stadia) will all play within the same matchmaking pool. As soon as a group contains even one PC player, the whole group will be placed in the PC matchmaking pool. For PvE content, everyone will just get lumped into a single matchmaking pool.

In-game voice chat won’t be available at launch, but will be available “shortly after crossplay goes live.” No word on when that will be exactly, but we know Season 15 starts on August 24, so set your schedules for then.
