In a move that is likely to be controversial among fans, Bungie will be removing legacy content from Destiny 2 to make way for the future. After this morning’s announcement of the next few expansions to its MMO-lite shooter (each scheduled a year part until 2022), Bungie detailed how it will be handling the size and scope of Destiny 2 once those updates release. It seems taking the ax to lesser used planets and raids is the ultimate plan.

In a new initiative called the “Destiny Content Vault,” certain planets, missions, and raids that see less activity will be temporarily removed to make way for new content. This will help with install size bloat and give Bungie a chance to work on changes to this content without disrupting the flow of the current Destiny 2 experience. When the first update with the DCV arrives, players will see Mars, Io, Titan, Mercury, and Leviathan leave the game.

If all of those planets leaving puts a sour taste in your mouth, you can rest easy knowing Destiny 1 content will be re-entering the fray. The first update into the DCV will see the Cosmodrome making a return alongside the “Vault of Glass” raid. Older Destiny 2 areas will also make periodic returns for special events. Bungie is committed to recycling content every year so that players constantly have a reason to explore older areas again.

This major change will be taking place on September 22, 2020, for each platform (PC, PS4, Xbox One). This will see the reintroduction of the Cosmodrome, though it won’t be at full parity with its original Destiny counterpart. That will eventually happen during Season 13 and roughly when The Vault of Glass returns.

At least in some more positive and less confusing news, Destiny 2 will be getting free upgrades on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Players that buy into all of this content now will be able to take it with them when the newer consoles launch later this year. Bungie will also be adding cross-platform support, so that will help with getting parties together.

I’m still kind of confused at what this whole Destiny Content Vault thing is about, but at least Bungie is trying to mix things up.
