Vampires were once the coolest monsters in all of fiction, but the Kindred in Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines were never exactly fiends on the dance floor. The upcoming Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 promises to bring the horrible dancing from the original game back for a new generation of gamers to gawk at.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines was set in contemporary Los Angeles and the player could visit several nightclubs in the game. The various nightclubs were useful for encountering other Kindred, as well as finding willing victims to provide the blood that the player needed to survive. The nightclubs featured dance areas with a special prompt that caused the player to dance, which resulted in a ridiculous animation of a character model flailing its limbs around to whatever gothic/industrial metal song was playing at the time.
The popularity of the dance moves in the original Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines has prompted the developers of the sequel to include it in the game. The developers told Kotaku that one of the animators who worked on Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 had studied the dancing from the original game and recreated it using motion capture.
There are certain Kindred clans (like the Toreador) that pride themselves on their social skills and are always careful about how they present themselves in public, which means that they would never be caught dead (well, even more dead) dancing like the protagonist of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. The protagonist of that game had an excuse in that they were transformed into a vampire in a fit of passion and were never formally introduced into the ways of Kindred society, which means that the Toreador version of the protagonist might never have been taught how to dance.
It’s established in the current edition of Vampire: The Masquerade that Jeanette/Therese’s nightclub (The Asylum) had become an international franchise. It’s possible that they were so impressed by the protagonist of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines dancing that they managed to turn it into a dance craze, which is probably a better canon explanation than anything that appears in Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 will be available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in March 2020.
