Dell has launched the latest generation of its high-performance XPS desktops with top-end hardware that includes Intel’s Core i9-12900K Alder Lake processor and NVIDIA’s RTX 3090 graphics card. XPS, which stands for ‘eXtreme Performance System,’ is a line of consumer-oriented high-end laptop and desktop computers from the Texas-based company and has always offered flagship hardware for enthusiasts and gamers. The latest range is no exception and comes with the very best that modern technology has to offer, wrapped in a subtle, understated packaging.
With a crippling chip shortage continuing to affect the consumer technology industry, graphics cards have become almost impossible to buy over the past year. Whatever stock the manufacturers are churning out for the retail market is being sold at exorbitant rates by scalpers and unscrupulous retailers. As long as there’s no real change to that scenario, the all-new XPS desktop offers buyers the best chance to get their hands on a high-end rig with an RTX 3090 or an RX 6900 XT graphics card.
The new XPS desktops have an understated design language and pack Intel’s latest processors alongside a choice of either NVIDIA’s or AMD’s latest graphics cards. Buyers will enjoy the boosted speed of up to 5.2GHz with the Intel Core i9-12900K, a 16-core, 24-thread CPU. In terms of graphics options, buyers can choose up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 or an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT. Users can also configure the desktops with up to 128GB of DDR5 3600MHz RAM, which is twice as much RAM as the last-gen XPS lineup. Other configuration options include up to 2TB NVMe M.2 PCIe SSD and 2TB 7200 RPM SATA HDD. The top-end variant will also ship with a 750 Watt power supply.
The New Dell XPS Offers A Liquid Cooling Option
The latest XPS generation is also the first to ship with liquid cooling as an option, although it is limited to the CPU only. Dell also didn’t reveal the exact specifications of the liquid cooling system but claimed that the computer would be “18 percent cooler under load with liquid cooling” compared to the new 125W thermal solution. Connectivity options in the new desktops include an SD card reader, 3x USB-A ports, 1x USB-C port and a 3.5 mm headphone jack in the front, while at the back, there are 4x USB-A ports, 1x USB-C port, a DisplayPort socket and a Gigabit Ethernet port.
Dell says the latest XPS range will start at $920, but there’s no word on how much the fully-loaded, Core i9-powered, RTX 3090-laden liquid-cooled version will cost. However, it is unlikely to come cheap, which buyers should consider before even thinking about ordering one. The latest XPS desktop range will be available “later this fall” and will ship with Windows 11 out-of-the-box.
