In a move that’s sure to please diehard fans of the franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has brought the tactical nuke back. The killstreak debuted in Modern Warfare 2 in 2009 and has appeared in different forms over the years, but Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is the first game from Treyarch to feature the nuke.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare had a nuke in 2019, but players had to earn 30 kills without using killstreaks in order to earn it. It was the first re-appearance of the actual tactical nuke since 2009 and gave players a satisfying way to end matches. Over the years, there have been other, similar major killstreaks such as the MOAB in MW3 or the DNA Bomb, which didn’t end matches after earning them. The new nuke acts more like the latter than the classic MW2 nuke.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s nuke was quietly added in the latest update, discovered by player Ghost Rymms, and wasn’t even mentioned in patch notes (via Dexerto). The nuke is only available in the limited time “Die Hardpoint” mode added in the new Black Ops: Cold War 80s Action Heroes update and will be activated after 25 kills with any weapon. Players can then call it in, killing everyone in the lobby, but the match will continue after everyone respawns. It also appears it can be earned multiple times in one game, which is pretty nifty for particularly skilled players.

Whether or not there are any plans to keep the killstreak around after the mode goes away, making it a more official part of the game, remains to be seen. It seems likely it’ll probably be rather limited, given it doesn’t have that significant of an effect on gameplay beyond just forcing everyone to respawn, but perhaps Treyarch can be swayed if there’s enough fan demand for it.

It’s not the first nuke related to this title either, as Black Ops Cold War’s season 3 update, which added deeper integration with Warzone, saw Verdansk getting nuked, allowing a flashback to the same map in 1984. Treyarch was the only developer to never dabble with a massive killstreak like this, so maybe fans can rely on the beloved developer to bring more streaks like this in future games. It’s unclear if Sledgehammer Games will add a nuke in its new rumored WWII title, given nuclear bombs played a major role in the war, but it could be deemed insensitive. The developer’s new game is expected to be revealed sometime later this summer.
