Editor’s Note: A lawsuit has been filed against Activision Blizzard by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which alleges the company has engaged in abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against its female employees. Activision Blizzard has denied the allegations. The full details of the Activision Blizzard lawsuit (content warning: rape, suicide, abuse, harassment) are being updated as new information becomes available.

Players caught cheating in any Call of Duty title can now be banned in past, present, and future games in the franchise, according to an updated security enforcement policy. Publisher Activision Blizzard and its partners have spent the last couple of years or so cracking down on cheaters in Call of Duty. However, it continues to pose a problem across multiple entries in the long-running military shooter series. In fact, hackers even found a way to employ cheats such as aimbots in the Call of Duty: Vanguard beta, ruining the fun for many a user who prefers to play fairly.

New measures mean to tackle the exploits head-on, though, evident in Activision’s and Raven’s creation of an all-new anti-cheat system. This move essentially follows in the footsteps of Riot Games’ Vanguard, custom-made game security software designed to keep hackers at bay in Valorant. Considered invasive at the outset, Vanguard seems to have paid dividends in the long run since reports suggest cheating in Valorant is at an all-time low. The latest security measures from Call of Duty’s anti-cheat department could see it shed a few more hackers, as well.

Call of Duty’s security team has issued an update to its COD: Vanguard Security and Enforcement Policy, with a post on the Activision Support (via VGC) page informing users of newly implemented “permanent suspensions.” If a Vanguard player’s suspension is labeled permanent, the ban will be judged as “lasting and final” and may apply to the latest entry as well as past and future Call of Duty experiences. This level of punishment is being reserved for those who engage in “extreme or repeated violations,” the blog post continued before outlining a list of offenses that range from spoofing and boosting to acquiring pirated content and utilizing unsupported peripheral hardware.

It seems a strict measure to take, but whether or not it deters Call of Duty cheaters from continuously exploiting the games is another matter entirely. At the very least, here’s to hoping the new security policy marks one step towards significantly reducing the number of hackers that have long plagued the franchise.

The latest COD installment, Vanguard, launched last week, dropping players into another Sledgehammer Games-helmed World War II adventure. Unsurprisingly, leaks about next year’s entry are already making the rounds, with reputable sources such as leaker Tom Henderson claiming the 2022 title will serve as a direct sequel to Modern Warfare (2019).
