Following a brief beta period, Call of Duty: Mobile launched on October of 2019 to critical and commercial acclaim, seeing large numbers of downloads and a steady stream of content updates since that time. Now that the game has been available for a few months, it looks like the game is poised to remain relevant in 2020 thanks to the ongoing updates added by the developers.

A telling sign of success is the number of initial users and a more recent count. In the first week of its official launch, Call of Duty: Mobile had been downloaded more than thirty-five million times, which is an impressive feat for a free-to-play mobile title. Downloads have been steady since then, and another five million downloads were recorded for iOS in December. Continued interest and word of mouth seem to keep working to draw in new players.

The continued interest in the game should come as no surprise to those have who been following the ongoing development and content updates. When the game first launched, it featured many of the most popular multiplayer modes of the Call of Duty series, including a free and premium Battle Pass that rewards great-looking cosmetics, but there were some criticisms about the structure of the pass.

In response, the developers revamped the Battle Pass to address the feedback provided by players. Last week heralded the start of Season 3 in Call of Duty: Mobile, and at the forefront of the update notes were the key points that led to the changes in the pass, to which player response has been positive so far. The developers have demonstrated a willingness to listen the players that should be indicative of good things to come this year.

With regards to the quantity and quality of content coming up in 2020, there is no short supply of material to draw upon from the Call of Duty series. So far, the updates in the first three seasons have clearly shown a plan to keep players on their toes. In this last update, the developers added a brand-new map and have another on the way, both of which borrow from previous games.

Limited-time modes are always being rotated in and out of available offerings. The Battle Royale mode, and new, smaller Warfare mode, and competitive rankings are indicative of the general way in which the developers will keep player interest high.

In terms of competition, the biggest names are PUBG and Fortnite, both of which have amassed massive followings of players in the last few years. With that said, Call of Duty is a recognizable brand, leveraging its player base from PC and console to extend to the mobile platform.

Ultimately, the active development team and communication with its players should combine nicely with the ever-growing popularity of the mobile gaming platform to keep Call of Duty: Mobile relevant for 2020. It would take several major changes to the points listed above to knock the game from its upwards trajectory, so it should remain in its spot near the top for the foreseeable future.
