Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War was just unveiled, and when the developers teased an unconventional reveal, they weren’t kidding. It was easily Warzone’s biggest and best in-game event yet.

Logging in, you’re greeted by a playlist update with a single game mode: “Know Your History.” You’ll also notice the store page has a glowing red banner signaling pre-orders for Black Ops: Cold War.

New Event Mode and Pre-Game Lobby

Once you load up the playlist, it acts like any typical Warzone game, searching for players. Eventually, things start to get a little weird…

While the splash screen initially looks like the standard tips section, there’s suddenly some kind of interference, as if the game is picking up incoming signals.

This interference is a recurring theme throughout the event. Something is off about Verdansk, and you are left in the dark. The tips are redacted, with images of early 1980s offices and intel rooms being shown in their place.

In the pre-game lobby, you will notice that there is an objective list titled “Steps To Freedom,” with each subsequent step being redacted on the left-hand side of the screen. Speaking of redacted, so is your location on the compass.

Know Your History: Step 1

When the match finally starts the Warzone intro plays, but as you see above, a fighter plane swoops, more signal interference, and the location details are redacted. When the game starts, you are greeted to a new dialogue intro that says, “Redacted. Every journey begins with a single step…this is step 1.”

You will see that all locations in Verdansk have been redacted, but the steps to freedom are now declassified, with the first step being to collect map codes, followed by securing a key, cracking a map code, and finally wielding the weapon. Enigmatic, to say the least.

The first step is simple and requires you to kill or loot to gain map codes. Map codes are dropped items that act as loot. Don’t worry about dying, since the game mode is similar to plunder – unlimited respawns, baby. You will continue to get incoming distorted audio and visual messages throughout your journey, completing the steps to freedom. The audio and video are Yuri Bezmenov’s famous interview on ideological subversion, which was used heavily in the recent Cold War teaser.

When you collect the map codes, the game will place a marker for you and your squad to secure a key. Once the key is secured, you will then be asked to crack the map code.

Fortunately, in the gameplay recorded above, another member of the squad cracked the code fairly quickly. The steps do not seem to be overly complicated, with the majority of them being recovering loot items, so don’t worry, you won’t need to bring along an expert cryptographer.

With each step completed, the game rewards you with a new emblem, calling card, or charm. For completing the second step, you will gain the Ascension calling card, a series of numbers ticking up, and a callback to the mystery behind the numbers used to brainwash Mason in Black Ops.

Know Your History: The Weapon

The final step is where the event takes an exciting turn. The only directions for this step are a letter and a number. You should quickly pick up that these are coordinates that line up with the map in Verdansk. In the gameplay above, the coordinates were C2, leading to a building beneath the dam. We’re not sure if the coordinates are always the same for every player, so keep that in mind.

The location is distant, so try to survive and quickly secure a vehicle, preferably a helicopter, to make it to the area before time runs out. In the footage above, you will see that Frank Woods greets you on-site and gives you the Bay of Pigs sniper blueprint. The gun is a reference to the infamous Bay of Pigs invasion and looks similar to a Mosin Nagant.

Once all the members of your squad collect the weapon, a countdown starts. Before the timer hits zero, the Warzone announcer begins reciting a series of numbers. We’re not sure what the numbers mean (Mason), but hopefully, somebody will crack the code.

Know Your History: The Reveal

The event gets trippy, with the Call of Duty Cold War teaser playing, which lulls you into a false sense of security since you think the teaser will play again. Suddenly, you are dropped back into Verdansk with the audio of Yuri Bezmenov’s interview playing, with quotes coming up on your screen. You’re tasked with just running to the stadium. It is something worth experiencing, but if you can’t play it for yourself, the video above will do the trick.

Once you complete the event, you will gain a new calling card and emblem.

And finally, a pre-order page appears, letting you get your hands on the exclusive pre-order bonus. Whether there are more secrets tucked away in this event are unknown at the time of writing. However, knowing the Call of Duty community’s dedication, we will quickly find out if any new secrets are uncovered.
