The Pokémon series is all about the bond between the trainer and the Pokémon they catch on their journey. Players become attached to the Pokémon they catch and raise, watching as they evolve and become stronger in battle. Building that bond may be why a core series mechanic has let players trade their Pokémon to future games since the first two generations of Pokémon games.
Originally, players could trade their teams to the next game in the series via link cables on the GameBoy or wirelessly on the Nintendo DS. Modern games have players use Pokémon Home and Pokémon Bank. It’ll be possible to transfer the same Pokémon from the first game to the most recent installment, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, once Pokémon Home updates to support Generation 4 remakes. Until then, players can always take their Pokémon on a regional sight-seeing tour throughout the main-line series. While it might not be possible to take the same Pokémon from Generation 1 to Generation 8, players can take their Pokémon to every main-series Pokémon region.
To start, players will want to begin their journey in the Generation 2 remakes Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver. These games have the first two Pokémon regions included while also being on a platform that can move ahead fairly easily. With Kanto and Johto both included, this helps knock out the two earliest regions that would otherwise be fairly difficult to visit. From here, Hoenn will have to wait as players shift their teams up to Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum.
Once the Pokémon have been moved to the Sinnoh region, they’ll be going chronologically from region to region except for a brief detour to the Hoenn region. This can’t be done in chronological order because, while the first two generations of games could trade up from themselves, players couldn’t transfer Pokémon from Gold, Silver or Crystal to the Generation 3 games. Luckily, the Generation 3 remakes allow players to take their Pokémon to Kanto, Johto and Hoenn without skipping Sinnoh.
Transferring Pokémon from Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum to Black/White or Black 2/White 2 will cover the Unova region and work as the key for taking them to future games. The Generation 5 Pokémon games allow players to transfer to the Pokémon Bank service, which can help players transfer their Pokémon to future games. After porting Pokémon from Unova to the Pokémon Bank, players can finally take their team to the Hoenn region by transferring them to Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire.
It’s also possible to stop by the Kalos region before Hoenn by transferring from Bank to Pokémon X & Y on the 3DS. Either way, players can go from Kalos to Hoenn or Hoenn to Kalos by trading between the Generation 6 3DS games. However, leaving the 6th Generation behind requires returning to Pokémon Bank and then transferring to Pokémon Sun & Moon or Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon. After a quick tropical vacation to the Alola region, there will be one more stop to Pokémon Bank before transferring to Pokémon Home.
There’s only one more Pokémon region left to visit, and it’s at this point that this world tour becomes a bit more complicated. Not every Pokémon can be sent to Pokémon Sword & Shield, as not every Pokémon is supported by the game. Players should check what Pokémon can be transferred to the Galar region before taking their teams for this sight-seeing tour to ensure that they can complete the journey. Either way, all players need to do from here is transfer from Pokémon Home to Sword & Shield.
Outside of sticking with the same team throughout an entire Pokémon journey, there’s a few different reasons why players would want to take their teams from region to region. For one, players could try to enter the same team into every single Hall of Fame, collecting League Ribbons as they go. There are also the contest ribbons in Hoenn and Sinnoh to collect, with the original Generation 3 games and their remakes having different ribbons. However, the biggest appeal is taking the same Pokémon or Pokémon team to every single region and building that bond across generations of games.
