Despite being a relatively new game, Capcom is supporting Teppen wholeheartedly with an upcoming competitive tournament where the prize pool is expected to reach around $500,000. The information was revealed during the Teppen Asia Japan Premier Event, along with news of an upcoming new character, future expansions, and what exactly players can expect in tournaments.

The first competitive event will be the Teppen Tokyo Game Show Cup starting on September 12. Registration is open for all attendees with a prize pool of $10,000 for the top finishers. Later this year, the Teppen World Championship is slated to take place in Tokyo in December.

As with most online Trading Card Games (TCG) and Collectible Card Games (CCG), Teppen will have four distinct regions for its competitive event, split between the “Host”, which in this case will be Japan, North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. The top three players per region will receive an invite to compete for the top prizes.

The game is so new, having only released in certain parts of the world in early July, that it will be fascinating to see how the meta shapes up for these first competitive events. This is especially true because in games like Hearthstone and Magic: The Gathering Arena, the different meta strategies between these similar regions is often significantly different.

Also similar to both of those games, qualification will be achieved through online matches, restricted per region, in an effort to secure one of those three spots. Details on how points will be awarded is yet to come.

The first world championship will be sponsored by Amazon, who is now considered the first Platinum sponsor of the game. Capcom has stated that it expected additional sponsors to be added as the event nears, which would also increase the prize pool.

Although the game is still in its infancy, it is great to see Capcom pushing hard for its competitive scene and adding the financial backing to spur interest. This past weekend saw the greatest fighting game players meet for EVO 2019, resulting in some of the best action we have seen all year. However, that event has relatively little money despite its titles being among the most popular fighting games in the world.

Surely with a $500,000 prize pool planned, Teppen is well on its way to being a focal point for new players, particularly with open qualifiers that can allow for anyone to make their way to the top for a slice of that prize money.
