When comics book fans gather to talk about their favorite characters, it’s always good to have a few unpopular opinions on hand to spice things up. One of the best characters to bring in unpopular opinions about is the legendary Marvel hero Steve Rogers, aka Captain America.

Reddit is full of unpopular opinions about almost anything a person can imagine, especially comic book characters. There are arguments from Redditors on Rogers, Sam Wilson, and various comic storylines such as Civil War. Even the Star-Spangled Avenger isn’t immune from negative internet comments.

10 Cap Only Exists To Give Corny Pep Talks

Captain America 10 Unpopular Opinions About The Comic Books According To Reddit

In the “Unpopular Opinion” Reddit thread, user Laban_fiend complains that “Out of all the Avengers, [Steve is] the most useless I feel. Cap is basically there just to give them corny pep talks before going on a mission.” Surely fans see more in Cap than just a token figurehead.

Cap has often been a leader, not only of the Avengers but often the entire Marvel Universe of superheroes. His final stand against Thanos in one of Marvel’s most essential comics, The Infinity Gauntlet, is iconic because of the speech he gives to the Mad Titan. Even without the necessary powers to overwhelm him, Cap still stands up to him because it’s the right thing to do. This declaration rouses the other heroes, who eventually defeat the villain.

9 Cap Is Petty

In “Comic Books,” user Atomcrafter asserts that “Captain America is a petty a**hole.” That’s quite a description of an honorable leader like Cap. The user gives no examples of why they feel this way about Cap.

This obviously isn’t a popular opinion, as the various Captain Americas are often seen as shining examples of unselfish, caring heroes. Some elaboration by Atomcrafter would’ve been interesting, allowing Redditors to find out what made the user think so little of Cap.

8 Cap Is Boring

In “Comic Books,” KnightCyber points out that “Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Black Widow, and the Hulk are all just kind of massive boring a**holes.” This user doesn’t just limit this unpopular opinion to Cap, they apply it to all of the main Avengers.

The popularity of these characters (due in part to the MCU) suggests that they’re anything but boring. They wouldn’t be popular or have best-selling comics if they were as boring as this user claims. Cap himself is a fascinating character that has attracted notable writers like Ed Brubaker, Rick Remender, and Ta-Nehisi Coates to create compelling storylines for the durable hero.

7 Cap Is The Worst Avenger

In “Unpopular Opinion,” Mydadsnameisharold argues that “Captain America is the worst Avenger. That goody-goody bulls*** is so annoying. His patriotic aesthetic is major cringe. Everything about him is annoying.” There are no minced words here.

What isn’t up for debate is that Steve Rogers is different because of the time period in which he grew up. Yes, Cap has the patriotism and “goody-goody” nature, but he’s primarily a decent person in a way others around him aren’t. All of it is good-natured, and he brings none of the worst “product of his time” issues into play like some people his age.

6 Sam Wilson Will Just Be Seen As A “Spin-Off” Cap

Citing DC characters like the Kyle Rayner version of Green Lantern playing second fiddle to Hal Jordan, a user who remained anonymous in “Comic Books” argues that Steve Rogers’ presence lessens Sam Wilson’s role as Captain America. The user says, “When you have two existing versions of a character, one will always be the ‘main’ version and the other the spinoff… Sam isn’t Cap if Steve is around.”

Comingtogetyou provides a counterpoint that Sam isn’t seen as a spin-off, saying, “Your example about Capt. America would have been different if Bucky or Sam had been Captain America for 20 years.” The argument here is that Kyle Rayner was the main Green Lantern for a long time, and will mainly be known by that superhero name. Sam and Bucky both took up the shield, but they’ll always carry the monikers of Falcon and Winter Soldier too.

5 Cap Lifting Mjolnir Would Never Be Seen Outside Of Comics

Captain America 10 Unpopular Opinions About The Comic Books According To Reddit

This opinion is unpopular because it didn’t age well. A year before Avengers: Endgame came out, Theavengingewok said in “Comic Books” that “We most likely won’t see stuff like Cap lifting Mjolnir” in the MCU. Comic fans may have some favorite moments they won’t get to see in movies, but this user was proved wrong there.

Steve Rogers has lifted Mjolnir in comics multiple times. He first did it in Thor #390 in 1988. He notably did it in the storylines “Fear Itself” and “Secret Empire.” And at the end of Endgame, Cap memorably lifted the magical hammer to fight Thanos.

4 Steve Should’ve Stayed Dead

Captain America 10 Unpopular Opinions About The Comic Books According To Reddit

In an argument similar to the ones DC fans make about Barry Allen or Hal Jordan, Chimchimov says in “Comic Books” that “Steve should’ve either stayed dead or just be Steve Rogers.” In comparison to Barry and Hal, Steve’s “death” was very short-lived.

Steve appears to die in the 2007 comic Captain America#25. Just two years later, 2009’s Captain America: Reborn #1 reveals Steve was never really dead so him “staying dead” was pretty much off the table. But there wasn’t enough time for his death to radically alter Captain America comics the way that Barry’s and Hal’s did. When those DC heroes died, their successors stayed in their inherited roles for over a decade. Two years simply wasn’t enough time for Bucky or Sam to establish themselves or for the Captain America title to have a different identity after Steve’s death. So the clamoring for him to stay dead doesn’t hold the same weight.

3 Sam As Cap Was “Forced”

This very unpopular opinion is a secondhand one, as the user who talks about it here doesn’t support this opinion, but rather just shares that some people “whine” about the topic. Using examples of Sam Wilson becoming Captain America or Jane Foster assuming the mantle of Thor, HellsquidsIntl says, “Some comics fans fear change, and get angry mostly out of a sense of entitlement. There is no ‘diversity quota,’ and people are confusing ‘gimmick’ with ‘story idea I don’t like.'”

In a prime example of toxic fandom, some fans dismiss a POC or female character taking on the mantle of a famous hero as “forced diversity.” But the user in this thread correctly summarizes that it’s just them complaining about a story they don’t like and acting they have a legitimate reason to attack it.

2 Cap Was Wrong In Civil War

Captain America 10 Unpopular Opinions About The Comic Books According To Reddit

The comic storyline “Civil War” ran from 2006-2007, and it found heroes on either side of a debate about the Superhero Registration Act. Captain America led the side against the act, while Iron Man led the side that was for it. In “Marvel,” Mekbop argues that “Iron Man is right for both Civil Wars, movie and first comic (it’s pathetic how they want you to root for Cap).”

While the MCU changed the reason for the fight (as there weren’t really secret identities in the movies), either one shows that Cap wants to protect people and his fellow heroes. In the comics, Cap doesn’t want heroes to be forced to reveal who they are, and revealing a hero’s identity goes against most comic book norms. In perhaps the best display of Cap being right, Spider-Man switches sides from Iron Man to Cap, even though he’d already revealed his identity.

1 HydraCap Worked Well

In the “Marvel” Reddit thread, DecoderPuffin asserts that “HydraCap was a good idea.” HydraCap himself was one of the most controversial things in the last 20 years of comics, with some fans being up in arms over it for months. After Hydra rewrites reality with the Cosmic Cube, they make it so Cap was always a Hydra Agent.

While this was obviously never permanent, and it wasn’t something Cap willingly chose, it still caused a stir. Some fans likened it to Bruce Wayne being revealed as his parents’ killer. It was something that was completely against the fundamental core of Captain America. A person liking HyrdaCap is probably one the most unpopular opinions a fan can have for Captain America as this era is not referenced much in the current continuity.
