Warning: contains a preview of The United States of Captain America #1!

Captain America’s shield was just stolen by an impostor dressed like Cap, and clearly possessing Super Soldier abilities as well. In the story “You Brought Two Too Many,” appearing in the first issue of The United States of Captain America, Steve Rogers loses his iconic shield to the fake, and he and Sam Wilson begin a chase to reclaim it. The issue is on sale June 30 in print and digital.

2021 is the 80th anniversary of Captain America, and to celebrate the occasion, Marvel is bringing together four different Captain Americas – Steve Rogers, John Walker, Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson – in one epic adventure. The miniseries will not only feature former Caps, but will also look at his legacy, and the people from all walks of life he has inspired. The stories are written and drawn by some of today’s top talent. This bold new adventure kicks off in a special preview of The United States of Captain America #1.

In the story, written by Christopher Cantwell, with art by Dale Eaglesham, colors by Matt Milla and letters by Steve Caramagna, Steve Rogers is relaxing at home when he is attacked by someone dressed like Captain America. The impostor is every bit as strong and agile as Steve, and having the element of surprise, manages to overpower him, knocking him unconscious and taking off with his shield. Steve quickly comes to and radios Sam Wilson, the Falcon, for help. Falcon gives pursuit in the air and Steve on the ground, with each attempting to stop the thief before he leaps aboard a passing train and escapes.

The preview ends there, and readers must wait until Wednesday to learn more about this shield-swiping Super Soldier impostor, but for now, Captain America is without his shield, and this is the perfect starting point to look at his legacy. The series will also drop in on other heroes inspired by Captain America’s legacy – this issue focuses on the Captain America of the Railways, Aaron Fischer. With the story’s villain heading for railway tracks, there’s an obvious opportunity to tie these threads together, sending Steve Rogers’ shield-recovery team on a tour of the country and highlighting the legacy heroes who are involved along the way.

One of the most iconic characters in comics, Captain America’s 80th anniversary is cause for celebration, and The United States of Captain America #1 is shaping up to be not just a white-knuckle adventure befitting the star-spangled hero, but a sincere attempt to examine how the larger concept of Captain America doesn’t belong to any one man, but rather every member of the nation that the shield-bearer is sworn to protect. Of course, that protection is a lot easier when Captain America has his unbreakable shield, so hopefully he can get it back when the comic hits physical and digital retailers later this week.
