Lauri-Ell, a Kree super-soldier, has been revealed as Captain Marvel’s half-sister in Captain Marvel #29 and she definitely has more than just a parent in common with Carol Danvers. While new siblings have been appearing all over the place in Marvel (most recently, Miles Morales discovered his clone brother), Lauri-Ell is certainly a unique take on the concept. First appearing in Captain Marvel #18, written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Cory Smith, inks by Adriano di Benedetto, and colors by Tamra Bonvillain, Lauri-Ell has appeared in – and has been referenced – in several more issues, so it would appear that she is here to stay.
Lauri-Ell was introduced in Accused: Part One as a soldier of the Kree/Skrull alliance. She is an artificially bred super-soldier, the technically biological child of two powerful Kree soldiers, one of whom is Mari-Ell, Carol’s mother. Having the same mother makes Lauri-Ell and Carol half-sisters. When Carol found out about Lauri-Ell’s heritage, she spared her from death and brought her back to Earth. Even though Captain Marvel lost her powers as the Accuser, she did gain a half-sister from this adventure. The two got a chance to bond like only super-soldiers and superheroes can: by defeating a Cotati invasion.
Not only is Lauri-Ell Carol’s half-sister, but she also shares another aspect with Captain Marvel: the ability to be an Accuser. When Carol lost her Universal Weapon at a battle in K’in-Al (the experimental sanctuary where members of fallen empires can live together in peace), Lauri-Ell is able to call the weapon to her. When the Cotati had been defeated, Emperor Hulkling appointed Lauri-Ell as his new Chief Accuser, in place of Carol. The Accuser, previously a position held by Ronan the Accuser, who worked for and was punished by Thanos, wields the Universal Weapon, a powerful weapon that can perform a variety of attacks, such as fire, flight, and physical attacks.
Discovering lost siblings – be it through cloning, a shared parent, or an alternate universe – is an amazing way to expand one character’s breadth. Adding Lauri-Ell to Carol’s world expands who she is as a character and can, in some instances, make her human half shine even brighter. But having a sister like Carol can also make Lauri-Ell more human as well. She was born – and bred – to be a fighter and to be the strongest. Allowing herself a moment of weakness, even to visit the grave of her mother, is not something she is supposed to do – but it is something she can do because she has Carol in her life in some form. And, even though Carol may not be respected by magic users in the Marvel Universe, she has her half-sister with some shared experiences.
Lauri-Ell brings more to the table than just being the Chief Accuser. She brings all the same strength, agility, endurance, and more that the Kree are known for. Further, Lauri-Ell provides a more solid connection to Captain Marvel’s Kree side. Having an additional strength like that in the universe is a good thing for the Marvel Universe and, while there may be some misconceptions about Captain Marvel’s powers, Lauri-Ell’s are more straightforward and classically Kree.
