Warning! Spoilers ahead for Under the Helmet: The Legacy of Boba Fett

In Star Wars’ new Boba Fett documentary special, it’s been revealed that the helmet of Clone Wars’ Captain Rex is actually a secret easter egg referencing the famed bounty hunter himself. While Fett’s first on-screen appearance came during the now infamous Star Wars Holiday Special and its cartoon sequence, it wasn’t the first time the legendary bounty hunter was introduced to the public. Interestingly enough, Boba Fett’s costume was featured in a local California parade wearing an early model of his helmet that should look quite familiar to present-day fans.

As revealed in Under the Helmet: The Legacy of Boba Fett, the short documentary feature shared the origins of the legendary bounty hunter’s costume. Initially, Fett’s Mandalorian armor was meant to belong to an entire faction of Imperial super-troopers. Budget constraints forced George Lucas to give the now-iconic armor to a single new character: a bounty hunter named Boba Fett. Given this new change, Boba’s armor was given new colors and more unique details, some of which didn’t make it to The Empire Strikes Back’s release in 1980.

The documentary reveals footage from a local Marin County parade in 1978. Because George Lucas lived in the area, two screen-used Star Wars costumes were featured in the parade. While the first was the ever-popular Darth Vader, the second was Boba Fett, whom fans had never seen before. However, it’s clear from the footage that this version of Fett’s armor was not quite the final version used in his theatrical debut—note the jaig eye decals adorning the helmet, for instance. While they were eventually removed prior to Empire, the same eye decals would be seen years later in 2008 on Clone Wars’ Captain Rex, the clone trooper who served directly under Anakin Skywalker.

While the jaig eye designs would later be given a canonical significance as a traditional Mandalorian sigil—calling back to Rex’s training from Boba’s father Jango—it’s impressive that the design which began on Boba Fett’s helmet for the duration of a single parade was then used years later to become a dynamic Easter egg and iconic part of a whole new character. While it’s certainly a fun connection, the eyes also serve to prove the level of dedication and detail shown by supervising creative director Dave Filoni and the rest of Clone Wars’ team of animators.

While the legacy of Boba Fett is already quite impressive, this new and largely unknown connection between the legendary bounty hunter and Captain Rex is pretty exciting and dynamic. It very much adds to the amazing interconnectivity and dimension featured in the galaxy far, far away in the best ways possible—both in the greater fictional narrative as well as behind the scenes.
