Developer Capybara Games has announced it will be bringing its roguelike exploration game Below to the PS4 this spring. Originally announced as an Xbox One launch title, Below was delayed time and again until it eventually hit PC and Xbox One in December of 2018. The title went through a lot of twists and turns and came out as a relatively good game.

The biggest complaint from players was that Below was tough. Being a roguelike, it obviously featured permadeath as one of its core mechanics. If that sounds off-putting to you, then fear not! This new PS4 release is coming with a mode that Capybara calls “Explore.” This will remove the survival elements from the game, enable checkpoints for players to restart from, and even eliminate instant kills that some enemies had.

If you are looking for that original challenge, Below will still have it. Now called “Survive,” this mode will restore everything to how it was on the PC and Xbox One original. Thankfully, these new features will be coming to the previous versions in an update around the release of the PS4 port.

Below was a game that I was looking forward to immensely. Capybara has a track record of making excellent titles with Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP being a standout. That studio even contributed some levels to Sony’s Sound Shapes, which were arguably the best levels in the game.

That’s what made the initial release of Below sting. It isn’t a bad game, but it definitely doesn’t live up to six years of hype and development. It felt behind the curve on a lot of survival mechanics and its roguelike elements didn’t mesh well with trying to explore this desolate world. “Explore” might remove a lot of the difficulty and tension, but it will be a great chance to actually see what Capybara built instead of fantasizing.

No price has been announced for the PS4 version, but it will likely be the same as the other versions. With Below coming to a new platform and getting an accessibility update, there’s no reason to sleep on this otherwise solid action title.
