Carrie-Anne Moss, who will reprise her role as Trinity in the The Matrix Resurrections, says she was blown away by how her character returns in the upcoming film. Moss returns alongside Keanu Reeves, who plays Neo in the series, in the long-awaited fourth instalment, which will release in cinemas December 22. Unlike the original Matrix trilogy, which was co–created, -written, and -directed by Lana and Lily Wachowski, the latter isn’t involved in The Matrix Resurrections, as she is taking time away from the entertainment industry.

The original Matrix trilogy began over a decade ago and ended in 2003 with The Matrix Revolutions, which was marked by the death of its two lead characters, Neo and Trinity. Trailers for the new film have revealed the return of both characters, however, leading fans to speculate about the in-universe mechanics of their reappearance. In addition to footage, official images have shown that Morpheus will be returning, but has been recast as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and a new Agent Smith has also been hinted at.

Now, in an interview with The Guardian, Moss reveals that she was really “blown away,” by the script and the manner of the characters’ return. She explains that returning to The Matrix series was not a hard decision, but that it was very unexpected. The actor also shares that the film expands on the previous films in ways she had “never imagined.” Check out her comments in full below:

I was absolutely over-the-moon excited about the prospect [of doing a new Matrix film]. It was something that I never imagined happening. People had mentioned it to me in passing, and I was always thinking: ‘No way. Never gonna happen.’ When myself, Lana, Keanu and a few others sat together to read [the script] for the first time, I was thinking: ‘What is this going to be like? How is she going to do this?’ [The way in which our characters return is] something that I never imagined, and I was really blown away.

Moss’ comments will go some way to reassure fans who have been eager to learn more about Neo and Trinity’s return to the series. The Matrix is known for its complex story, which is layered with metaphors and references to religion and philosophy, and it has always been accompanied by fan speculation. Viewers will wonder if their comeback will be explained by one of the series’ complex fan theories – the Matrix-in-a-Matrix theory is particularly well known, and some have speculated that the fourth instalment will prove it to be true, based on what’s been shared by the trailers.

While the promotional material has been heavy on cinematic spectacle, they have managed to give away very little about the plot, other than the return of Neo and Trinity. Following on from a beloved series, The Matrix Resurrections has set itself a high bar and fans will be going into theaters with high expectations. Ultimately, audiences will have to wait until the film releases to learn more about the plot and its returning characters, and see whether the story is as exciting as they hoped for.
