Alpacas playing soccer is the latest game we never saw coming, and it’ll arrive on Steam and Switch later this year.

Rocket League is soccer (or football, depending on where you’re from) but with cars, right? So imagine replacing those cars with fluffy semi-camels from South America. What do you get? Alpaca Ball Allstars, the new game from indie dev Salt Caste Studio.

Alpaca Ball takes place in a fictional world where Alpacas are the highest form of life and regularly fill stadiums to capacity in order to watch Alpaca Ball, which is like soccer, only you don’t kick the ball with your feet. Instead, you hit it with your long neck. There are no goalies, and the usual anti-contact rules of soccer seem to have been relaxed, judging by the number of flagrant fouls committed in the trailer.

Although alpacas are South American, the soccer pitches appear to have been inspired by multiple locales, including an ice-filled hockey rink and snow-covered rugby field. More traditionally warm pitches include a beach and an active volcano.

And of course, you can customize your alpaca in a number of different ways, including fur and eye color, sunglasses, hats, hairstyles, and ponchos.

Alpaca Ball Allstars will include a career mode where your alpaca will rise to the very heights of the Alpaca Ball League, as well as exhibition matches in single or multiplayer. The Steam release will even get Steam Remote Play which will allow friends who don’t even own the game to play from the comfort of their homes.

So why alpacas?

“We really like football as a game and wondered how the old established formula could be spiced up? We figured it would be extremely hard to expand the rules of a game that is hundreds of years old and loved by millions,” said Gregor Kirchhofer Produce at Salt Castle Studio. “But then we remembered that Alpacas make everything better, so here we are.”

They do. They really do.

Alpaca Ball Allstars releases on Steam and Nintendo Switch later this year. Wishlist on Steam today.
