If there’s one thing the po-faced, super serious world of 2018 needs, it’s a little more Charles Martinet. Well, buckle up, world, because –for whatever reason—he’s appearing as a playable character in the upcoming Runner 3.
The Runner franchise is one of the more peculiar in recent gaming. It was born from the critically acclaimed Bit. Trip series, a collection of seven titles comprising Bit. Trip Beat, Bit. Trip Core, Bit. Trip Void, Bit. Trip Runner, Bit. Trip Fate, Bit. Trip Flux and Bit. Trip Presents… Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien. The former six are wildly different takes on the same aesthetic (think the PixelJunk titles), spanning gameplay genres from Pong-like to shooters.
The latter, meanwhile, is a spiritual successor of the popular Bit. Trip Runner. This particular title was replete with all of the retro visuals, chiptune soundtrack and punishing difficultly that Bit. Trip is renowned for, and was perhaps the biggest and most fleshed out release in the series. In Runner, the player guides series stalwart Commander Video from left to right, along a range of endless runner scrolling courses.
Rhythm action, as always with Bit. Trip, was at the fore. The game was visually and musically striking, incredibly addictive and darn punishing, and critics and players alike seemed to dig it.
The follow up, which expanded on the concept and dialled up the crazy to eleven, was released in 2013. Now, Runner 3 is on the way, and it’s got a heaping helping of playable guest stars. Including one that all Nintendo fans will be familiar with.
The inimitable and ever-enthusiastic Charles Martinet, Mario’s voice actor, is going to be an unlockable character. That’s right. Runner veterans will know that this isn’t as odd as it may sound (Martinet voices the narrator in Runner 2, and will continue to do so in the follow-up), but it’s just hilarious to see.
The franchise is known for dabbling in guest stars. The last entry featured Dr. Fetus from Super Meat Boy and Spelunky Guy from Spelunky, among others. Runner 3 is set to continue that proud tradition beyond Martinet himself, with developer Choice Provisions teasing guest stars like Shovel Knight and Eddie Riggs of Brutal Legend.
If you’re a fan of the series, rhythm games or vibranium-tough retro-inspired titles in general, you owe it to yourself to check this one out. It’s due to arrive on Nintendo Switch and PC on May 22, with a possible release on other platforms to be confirmed. In the interim, check out the launch trailer.
