There’s nothing more of a pick-me-up than a platformer, so Ary and The Secret of Seasons is a welcome September release this year. It will be available on September 1st for PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC. A new trailer was published to accompany the announcement.
Ary and the Secret of Seasons has you take on the role of the titular character, trying to save the Guardians of Seasons of Valdi and restore balance to the world. Her powers are based on the seasons of the world, and they will help her traverse the world and battle her foes. For example, throwing a winter sphere allows you to freeze her surroundings with stalagmites becoming platforms. By using the powers of spring, vines can be grown to reach higher places. eXiin has said that the combat will feel “fluid” and “satisfying,” and while it’s no Ghost of Tsushima, it does look impressive for an indie title.
The Belgian developer eXiin has been developing the game since June 2016 and gained the help of Fishing Cactus while making the game to make the scope bigger. FC is responsible for making Epistory: Typing Chronicles, which has a very positive score on Steam with 2,871 reviews.
The 3D platforming genre is on the uptick right now. The Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon games were remade, and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is releasing this year. Psychonauts 2 also looks incredible with a mind-bending graphics style, and Super Mario Odyssey, Yooka Laylee, and A Hat In Time wowed fans of the genre in 2017.
Ary and the Secret of Seasons looks like a promising title from eXiin and Fishing Cactus. It’s cutscenes from the trailer above look whimsical and slapstick in tone, and the art style looks lovely. There will be boss battles that you will take on with her sword, rolling, and jumping abilities. After the multiple delays Ary has had, let’s hope the final product lives up to its potential when it releases on all major platforms later this year.
