Cheating in Trials of Osiris has become so pervasive that Bungie has been forced to take serious action.

When Trials of Osiris returned earlier in March, Destiny 2 PvPers were excited. Finally, the return of a beloved pinnacle PVP activity for all the Crucible try-hards. In their introductory video, Bungie promised that they’d keep an eye on Trials to ensure that the game mode remains healthy and devoid of cheaters.

Things haven’t exactly gone as planned. While cheating isn’t too pervasive at the lower-tiers of Trials, start making your way to the flawless tiers and you’ll find an ever-increasing number of players who only got there thanks to cheating.

Bungie notes that in the first four weeks of Season of the Worthy, the number of players banned for cheating ballooned from an average of 656 bans or restrictions per week to 2133 bans per week. We don’t know what that number is now, but it’s almost certainly higher.

The problem of cheaters has gotten so bad that Bungie’s latest news update for Destiny 2 addresses the issue head-on. The developer says that they’re considering a number of ways to mitigate the problem, including increasing the number of hours played in order to access Trials and also placing access behind the Season Pass paywall. This will prevent cheaters from making free (and disposable) accounts in order to go flawless in Trials.

More immediate actions include an update to Bungie’s ban policy. Since Trials of Osiris is a 3v3 activity, they’ve decided to also ban the teammates of cheaters in addition to the cheaters themselves. This encourages players to report cheaters if they LFG their way into a fireteam and find themselves playing with a hacker.

Bungie will also redirect more staff to the issue of cheating while also working more closely with Valve to make greater use of Valve Anti-Cheat. There are more changes expected to come to Trials of Osiris in Season 11, although Bungie hasn’t explained just what additional measures they’ll take to keep the scourge of cheaters at bay.
